Default Is This A Good Way To Train Shoulders?? Please help

Whenever I train my shoudlers, I like to place a great deal of my focus on all three heads. Here is a list of what I do:

Dumbell Machine Raise (b/c of my back)
Military Press w/ Smith Machine
Barbell Raise
Side Lateral Raise w/ barbell or cabell
Front Lateral Raise "

Now here is my question on the issue. Because the barbell raise places a emphasis on the lats, I would think doing a side lateral is pointless. Instead, I would do this routine to place better focus:

Barbell Raise: for lats
side, front, and back lateral raise with cable: for all 3 heads

And then for the following week switch to this:

Shoulder Machine Press
Military Press
Lateral Raise
Front Raise

And again switch to the other routine. With all this being said, is this plan feasibe? Does it make sense? Thank you.

what is your experience level. To me, only a 4 or 5 sets each week really need to be focused on your shoulders. Your shoulders will be hit pretty hard when you do any pulling or pushing.

If you are going to train your shoulders, I would simply stick with an upright row, side raise and military press of some sort.

I would stick with upright row and military press or clean and jerk. Actually, clean and jerk would be best in my opinion. Your shoulders will hurt like no tomorow if you do two good working sets of military press or clean and jerks a week and you should be fine.

I personally don't do front/lateral raises anymore as I feel a good military press/clean + jerk works the shoulders more then enough.. and going on that to, I don't work my traps directly, I work them all through deadlifts and other exercises.

Let me first say thank you for replying to my inquiry. I am at a intermediate level right now and usually like to read articles that discuss new techniques to lifting. Also, I meant upright row not barbell row so my apology for the misunderstanding.

I do agree with you in saying that 4 or 5 sets is more that enough, which is why I stick to 4. Before I would do upright row and lateral raise and shoulder raise together, which is when I started noticing how my lats were getting too wide. Now I do side. front, back and lateral raise with the cable and then I do the upright row. That way I am focusing on thel lats while those isolatione exercises are working the deltoid more.

You are neglecting the rear delt head. bent over laterals hit them really well... Your front delts get hit really hard when you bench press.. It is pretty common to see people whos front, and side delts overpower their rear delts.

most commonly you see well developed front delts, decent side delts, and no rear delts.. this happens because a lot of people neglect rear delts and don't hit them directly, and to make matters worse they hit the front delts real hard while benching, doing millitary press, and front raises. the side get hit really well with the military press, and side raises

DO yourself a favor and hit your rear delts first, and really work them hard.. I would leave out the front raises.. for now stick to rear laterals, side laterals, and millitary press...

Default You guys are awsome

Big thank you to everyone who has solicited their response. I think I found an official routine:

Smith Machine Barbell Press [I can switch b/w this and the shoulder machine ever other week]
Upright Row 3 sets 12 reps
Front Lateral Raise 3 sets 12 reps
Side Lateral Raise "
Back Lateral Raise "

I love rear shrugs and rear half uprights too . PLenty of stretching and I make sure I don't throw it between my chest and back routine so I don't have three days in a row of hard shoulder work.

Barely any shoulder work is needed with an overall training routine. 3 sets of military presses are enough for me per week.

Someone hit me with a link to show me how to do back lateral raise. I am that guy with front and side but no back development.

I'd get rid of those front raises and add another compound....like DB Shoulder press. And instead of Back laterals, I'd do a bent over Rear Delt row....
