I used to do a stance that was very comfortable for me but my friend told me to try a closer stance, about little more than shoulder to get more quads work. I tried that and messed up my knees, so now I go when I feel comfortable, I don't go by a measurement.

One thing I like about front squats is that they make it necessary keep the torso fairly perpendicular to the ground. I've seen a lot of back squatters use their lower back to move the weight durring the final reps of a set, they end up with some kind of squat/goodmorning hybrid. Front squat doesn't allow this, or you loose the bar. For squatters who haven't developed much skill for ground reaction force and biomechanics, the front squat makes an excelent test to weed out bad habbits that people who focus only on the back squat may develope.

^That being said, I really have no opinion on whether or not they are necessary for powerlifters or bodybuilders.

who cares about quads anyway... it's all about the posterior when it comes to squating.

I like both front and back squats.. though front squats are becoming a new favourite..they really hit the quads hard!

and its harder to have bad form. If your form is off to much you will have to dump the bar

How do your knees hurt?

I have trouble with the tendons just above my knee caps if I don't warm up enough. Knees can also be a problem if your hams are too tight. I have to do some serious ham stretches and warmups before I can squat without knee pain.

I like back squats but only because I have an ego problem and heavy=better to me. But I did front squats last leg day and they really hammered my quads. Its always good to switch it up.

IMHO zercher squats > front squats unless you're using FS's for a specific purpose

I've done Zercher squats before. They look they'll be pretty hard on your arms.. Do you bad the bar or do them bare?

i've done zercher's with knee pads wrapped backwards around my "elbow pits"

they were cool, but a totally different exercise, IMHO. They had different feel, different useage to me

A lot of people never do them. I tried them once and it was too uncomfortable for me (but I'm sure the more I tried them...)

Wow nice squats.

Right now I'm only at 405 for back squats. So I'll probably just start with 135 until I nail the form and start to feel comfortable with it.

The only time I've ever seen a zercher squat was diesel wiesels videos.
