Default Freeweight Calve Exercises

Hi,

My calf muscles are in need of work! What are some good exercises that really hit the calf muscles? I workout in my basement, so I don't have any fancy calf machines. . Right now, I grab a BB and rise up and down on my toes on a 2X4.

Thanks!
Aaron

Here are some others

I still think the barbell raise is your bread and butter calf movement though, if I was only going to do one, it would be it.

When your doing your calf raises be sure to use a board of some sort to get the full extended range of motion.

^^

Also seated calf rasies. I can imagine you can try to sit on a bench and then unrack the weight from the power rack and start doing them with a barbell. Never tried it, but seems like it would work; may need a towel for padding though...

Yes I do think that would work fine, although, I have never tried it. Just be sure to postition the weight as close to over your feet as possible, ( not too far infront) so you don't strain your back. If you could get the weight hanging between your legs, that would be ideal.

For a while, I did use a weight belt for standing calf raises on a platform I built. I used the weight belt so I could stablize myself for a very wide range of motion that was difficult to keep my ballance. There isn't anything wrong with experimenting, as long as you do it safely. -IMO

Hi,

Thanks for the replies! I am using s 2X4 for the added range of motion. You definitely need the towel for the seated claf raises. That barbell dug into my knees without it. I'll have to try some of those new exercises!

Thanks!
