Hanging leg raises are the king in my book. I haven't been doing them lately cause I don't even have the upper abs showing right now. (Yes fatty)

the entire abdominal columb contracts in all ab exercises. Varying your ab exercises is a good idea to build athleticism, strength and coordination, but has nothing to do with a "part" of your abs being trained.

isolating you abs is as silly as isolating fat loss

Technically, I think you are right. There are no lower and upper ab areas controlled by separate parts of the nervous system. But you have to admit that abdominis rectus is a different kind of muscle. Have you ever seen a belly dancer walk a quarter up and down her belly? While there is no distinct separate muscle parts making these smooth belly rolls, different parts of the ab rectus are in a contracting while others are relaxing in a continuous motion.

I like to do crunches on the stability ball. It is comfortable and it supports my back while doing crunches. As I go through my crunch, I can feel a wave of contraction moving up and down my abdominis rectus. IOWs, I feel the contraction move to different parts of my abs. Does this produce the same effect as an isolation exercise? I don't know.
