Question Dips only for tris?

What do you think the results would be if someone were to only do dips for triceps? I did an all dips triceps workout today and it seemed to hammer them pretty well.

I think you could do quite well, any exercise that involves moving your entire bw with your arms is pretty effective IMHO. Not sure if you'd bring out complete definition but as a general mass builder I'd think it would be effective on it's own.

If you have the strength, weighted dips are BADASS for your tris. I also really like skull crushers and CG Benchpress. I would do maybe 2-3 tri exercises to hit the heads at different angles though if you were to choose only one, dips are a good option.

Yeah, I currently do weighted dips for my chest tho.. but I guess I could drop them on chest day... and add a fly type movement... Then reinsert the weighted dips on my arms/shoulders day... I'm in favor of anythyng that let's me carry my Grizzly belt around the gym... I look SOOO intimidating.. (and at the same tyme - I attract all the women that are into leather & chains) .. It's a win/win situation..

Peace..~G

I think doing a good movement like that once in a while is effective, but imo it's not a prudent long term strategy. There's a reason that most people do several different movements for each muscle group. Different exercises hit the muscle different ways, so you get more well-rounded development of the muscle. For me, when I started working out, I emphasized dips and rope pushdowns and the long head of the tri really seemed to lag as opposed to the medial/lateral heads which seemed to develop nicely. For myself, I had to include things like french curls/skull-crushers that emphasize the long head to get better overall development of the tricep.

I would like a lot more variety then just one exercise personally. I would probably hit them well, but there are alot more exercises that can be a better benefit IMO.

Ya, I'd never consider doing it long-term, I was just curious if anyone had done something like that for the short-term and what kind of results you got.

For whatever reason, dips (usually assisted ones) only hit me in the chest area, with small tricep involvement. I have tried leaning back and leaning forward, but the same thing happens.

How wide is your grip? A narrower grip works tris better for me.

Usually a medium grip if I do them.

Well, I lyke to use an extremely narrow gryp for my dips.. I literally cross my hands... basically putting my ryght hand on the left bar & the left hand on the ryght bar.. then with my arms crossed, I'll do weighted dips... Really burns my tri's, pecs, rear delts, traps, calves, quads, glutes, serratus...

(Ok, I'm lying... but did you thynk about trying it?? )

Peace..~G

I tried that approach before for a few months. I only did weighted chins and weighted dips for my bis and tris. And my arms shrunk big time. I also lost all shape to my arms. I still don't understand why. Doing dips and close grip chins are the only exercise where my feeling and instinct have failed me miserably. I always get a huge pump from those exercises and they feel awesome when I do them. But my arms exhibit NO growth from doing them alone whatsoever.
