Default Dead lifts with a smith machine?

i saw a guy at the gym today dead lifting on the smith machine and i didnt even know what to think. everything i know makes me think that it would be very difficult to have good form and would make it very easy to injure yourself. am i wrong?

no they werent SL. it seemed like a really bad combo of a sumo and romanian. im thinking that he saw someone do it and wanted to try it but had no idea what he was doing... i was going to talk to him but seeing as im not all that experienced i wanted to make sure i was right before i made myself look like an a$$.

That's just wrong. He should start with the bar and add weight as he builds strength.

I can't think of anything beneficial coming from that. But, I hate smith machines in general. IMHO the only thing they're good for are angled pushups and pullups and hanging laundry. I suppose you *could* do SLDLs or rack pulls on one, but why?

Well there is the whole ego thing, too. It's nice to throw an extra plate on a bar that's counter-weighted.

Fortunately I'm the only one that uses the squat rack in my gym so I just do bench there. In fact I kinda camp in that area and do almost everything in the rack. Usually everything is set exactly how I leave when I come back the next day. Almost like having a big home gym.
