Exclamation BB Shrugs? Rev. grip Ok?

Hey when doing Barbell shrugs I commonly use a reverse grip like when doing deads. Is this ok? It feels like I work both sides equally. It is easier to hang on to the bar. It is easier then messing with wraps.

Yeah it will. Tear a bicep easy doing that, use straps and do double-overhand.

a couple inch movement will tear a bicep but deadlifts won't? I started using a reverse grip when I bruised my forearm and never had any bicep issues at all.

Depends on the form. Some people - and I watch them do it - not only shrug the bar up, but use the arms to move it further. Behind the back, this gives you the opportunity I spose to tear a bicep if you're not careful.

I don't even know how you'd do it behind the back that way but I guess if you do shrug-curls, you're absolutely right.

I'll have to disagree with your opinion then.

I watch a lot of people shrug - at the top of the movement they almost do a mini upright row, in order to get extra ROM. In that situation, an under/over grip behind the back will result in one arm bending in the fashion it does for a curl - even sitting here performing the movement without a bar puts a lot of unneeded stress on my shoulder. So it's either shoulder injuries or biceps injuries you'll get, as a result of compensating for one to avoid the other.

For barbell shrugs? Right now I don't go over 405.
But I really don't see how what my numbers are makes a difference when the original question didn't have a weight mentioned.

Use overhand grip for everything IMHO. To much risk involved with tearing a bicep or anything. I personally have dropped shrugs from my routine to, you could try that... and my traps are still pretty sore from deads and such.

I'm just trying to understand where you all are coming from that suggest a alternating grip will damage the bicep when it's used very commonly with deadlifts.

I've never went over 275 on shrugs. I have never noticed any bicep pain before. I've done behind the back also. I go much lighter and don't use a reverse grip when doing these.

Think about the difference in arm position.

The weight you use the more likely you will tear your biceps. I have seen numerous accounts of people on more advanced forums tearing their biceps doing 700 lbs. rack deadlift. I feel it when I do rack deadlifts with a mixed grip. Some with shrugs, people can handle a lot of weight.

It's all in using good form and a lot of common sense I suppose. Injuries can occur when you fail to use one or both.

Ihateveryone: You have to understand that when performing these specific exercises you're not curling the bar and should not be attempting to. Some people like to shrug and do a part curl. This particular way of shrugs should not be done with an alternating grip. However when done with the arms in a open position it should not cause any harm.

Uh, yeah. I understand that you are not supposed to curl the bar. I'm saying that most people I observe, in an attempt to get extra ROM or extra reps, use their arms to raise the bar further. I made that clear.
