This should probably be posted in the Exercise forum a little bit down the page.

As an overall back exercise, it is hard to beat deadlifts. Bent over barbell rows are a close second for me.

It depends on your condition and experience. Iaika's advice is good if you are in good shape. Deadlifts and bentover rows are the best. If you are just starting or getting back into lifting after a layoff, you would be better off getting into good shape first. In that case, I would recommend lat pulldown machines and cable rows exercises for the back.

Deads do not work your back the way that this thing does. I've never had a real hard lat pump from doing deadlifts. Deads work a lot of other muscles besides the back muscles, which is why it is such a great exercise for overall mass building.

I don't think that 1 exercise can really make a great back. A combination of chin/pullup varation, bent/db/cable row and a deadlift/goodmorning variation.

I think a really great back won't rely on a couple exercises.

every so often a deadlift really nails my lats hard and it hurts like a mofo the next day!

I'd say, pullups, bb rows, GM's, deadlifts, and massages
