Default prenatal vitamins

so, a friend of mine is just starting a weightlifting routine, she's 37 and hopes to be pregnant within the next 6 months or so. she was aksing me what vitamins to take - i told her prenatals - she said it would make her fat....any ideas on that? also, she's wondering how much she can work out being pregnant and so forth. this is sooo not my area, so I thought I'd ask you guys....

Cool Outta My League..

I see no reason why she can't workout UNTIL she gets pregnant...

But as for working out whyle pregnant.. I'm pretty clueless...

A personal trainer just had a lil boy at my gym... so I'll ask her tonyght..

I definitely thynk she should take the prenatal vitamins tho...

Hell, I thynk her weight gain may come from a HEALTHY BABY!!! .. more than the vitamins..

Peace..~G

Whoa! Taking prenatals is a great idea. Folic acid, which helps to prevent spina bifida, is best if taken before conception. So your advice here was spot on. What's a little confusing is your friend's response. Taking prenatal (or any) vitamin will not make her fat! There are virtually no calories in vitamins. In some cases, there might be ~15 calories or so in the capsule itself but this is nothing that will make her fat nor offset the benefit of taking a good multi.

As for working out, the general rule of thumb is that women who were working out preior to pregnancy can continue. Of course, she should confirm this with her doctor.

yes bump. i just talked to a nurse the other day and she said its a good idea to start the prenatals before you get preggers and while you are trying. she also said if the prenatals give an upset stomach to take flinstones instead. man i love flinstone vitamins!
