Do you know specificly what is wrong with your knee???
does it just pop, but is not painful kind of like when you crack your fingers, or is it painful, and you have a known injury?

I would suggest that if you can bare it to do very light, or bodyweight squats to see how they feel, if you are ok with them, do them with a 5lb dumbell in each hand, and work your way up slowly. Squats will strengthen your knees, if you do them properly.

If that is too painful get knee wraps to help stabilize your knee, and try the same thing...

My knees were like that, i started with the leg press for a few months before i started squatting. At least that way if you experience difficulty you dont get squished. Just my 2 British Pence :p

Edit: I said were because now they very rarely give me any problems

That is why I suggested squating with the dumbbells.

leg press is good too.. you can probably even put your hand over your knee caps to stabilize them..

You can great legs without squatting, you can work the legs with close to equal efficiency using a variety of other exercises (leg press, leg curl etc)

The major benefit of the squat IMO is the stress it puts on many other muscles which are necessary to stabilize the body throughout the exercise. Which is something you just cant get with the leg press.

Manders.. I do NOT squat because of knee and back problems.. and my legs are probably my best feature.. I do alot of leg press.. leg curls.. and alot of walking.. so you do not have to do squats to have nice legs.. it helps.. but you can get nice legs with other exercises.. and if it is going to cause you pain.. then I would suggest not doing squats right now.. at least until you feel your knee can withstand it.. but I would also wrap your knee to give it the support..

hope that helps a bit..

There is a lot of evidence that squating strengthens the knee. even if they are done bodyweight for a while..

They are a lot better for your knees than leg ext.

I can see not doing them because of back problems, but if you keep the weight fairly light, or bodyweight, and use proper form, they should be beneficial to your knee.

With her knee popping out of place.. it just would not be the best thing to be doing.. even with body weight squats.. I would think it would be better to strengthen the knee first.. to help prevent a possible injury..

I am not saying I am completely right here.. and it might help doing body weight.. but I was thinking about the possible injury during a squat.. and what other damage it could do.. but it is ultimately up to her.. what she feels comfortable doing..

I would look in to surgery to repair whatever it is. That must be scary.

I would wrap them reguardless of what she does for exercise, and start real slow.

They might even have braces specificly made for holding the patella(knee cap) in place....
