Recipes: 1 Rep Power: 12 | Some background: My mom is in her late fifties and she swims several days a week. I recently got her doing weight lifting with compound movements: Squat, bench press, shoulder press, deadlift, curl, row; using dumbbells and weights that seem heavy to her, and at a level that would be considered strenous. She likes it alot, her goals being increased bone mass, functional strength, and improved body composition, and was asking me about diet, especially proteins. Shes already doubled the weight she uses on every exercise. I encouraged her to up the protien in her diet and reduce the amount of carbs, especially high gi. My question is soy protein okay for older women? Im leary of the phytoestrogens and stuff in tofu and in soy powders. Should I just have her eat whey? I of course want her to eat more chicken and other meats as well.

Recipes: 1 Rep Power: 12 | Ok, I guess ill recommend she pick up a soy protein supplement. Any brands you guys recommend? I want her to take in about 100g total protein each day, so if she had a scoop with breakfast and a scoop after working out, the rest coming from whole foods, it would be great IMO.

| FDU Devils Weightlifter | I know a few older woman who ate a lot of tofu, ate soy burgers and all that stuff, who kept having cramps and headaches and lots of bad stuff. They were all post menopause. Their doc's said to drop all soy products and most ofthem got rid of their symptoms. Just saying. I personally believe no one should be taking any soy products period, but thats me. Its great that your getting your mom into lifting. My mom would never do that.
