Default SMOG

Does anybody have bad smog where you live?

Has anybody ever experienced the feeling in your chest after being outside all day in the smog?

What is smog?

Smog is a mixture of pollutants with ground-level ozone as the main component. Ground-level ozone is formed when nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds interact in the presence of sunlight. High up in the stratosphere, ozone protects the earth from harmful ultraviolet rays, but at ground level, it can be a harmful air pollutant.

About 95 per cent of nitrogen oxides that lead to the formation of smog, are produced when we burn fuels in our cars and trucks, or generate energy using combustion engines, combustion turbines, industrial boilers and power plants. Nitrogen oxides are related to other atmospheric problems such as climate changes and acid rain.

Volatile organic compounds are also necessary to produce smog. They come from the evaporation of liquid solvents and fuels such as gasoline or barbecue starter fluid, and from oil-based paint.

What causes summer smog?

On hot and sunny summer days, stagnant air can trap pollutants and, when combined with sunlight, result in unacceptable levels of ground-level ozone. Since ground-level ozone concentrations are generally highest when the sun’s intensity is at its maximum, smog levels peak in mid-afternoon, and fall rapidly in the evening when the sun goes down. The pollutants build up over time, so anything people can do to reduce individual contributions to smog is beneficial to air quality, not only on high pollution days, but every day.

Wow, So I can just go to where you live, and not worry about buying NO2 anymore!

On a serious note, smog is a bad problem, not where I live at all, but it is a serious problem. We have more chemical plants than anywhere and was always rumored that Institute West VIrginia (A town of about 3000 if that outside of Charleston) was on the top 10 list of terriorist to attack because of the amount of chemical companies (DOW, etc) and the things they make. It was also rumored that in World War II that it was highly targeted because the city of NITRO was made just for the war, and they made a lot of the stuff that furnished the war.

I don't live in So Cal anymore and Denver air is pretty good even though its thin.

One of the biggest causes of smog are gas powered lawn mowers. That is why I chose to use an electric mower. Just doin my part for the environment.

That is the way to go... my grandparents use an electric one. I hated the damn thing when I was younger because I hated that damn cord, but they are great now that I realize the benefits.

We have had several "ozone action days" this summer when it's hot, and the government offers these tips:
  • Carpool with friends or coworkers.
  • Wait until after 6 p.m. to fill up your gas tank.
  • Keep your car tuned-up and your tires properly inflated.
  • Mow your lawn after 6 p.m.
  • Use water-based rather than oil-based paints and solvents.
  • Walk or ride your bike short distances.
  • Stay away from busy roads and other sources of air pollution during outdoor activities.
  • Ride the bus.
  • Combine errands to reduce the number of car trips you have to make.
  • Limit engine idling.
  • If you must do things outdoors, plan activities for early morning or evening when ozone levels are lower.
  • Be careful not to spill fuel when filling gas tanks for your car or lawn equipment.
  • Reduce the amount of time spent waiting in drive-thru lanes; park and go inside instead.

ref = Ozone reduction

a few years ago, when i went to china, the skies were always gray, as a result of the "great leap forward" by that mao ze dong guy. An incredible amount of forestation was harvested. Its slightly better now, really nbothing to be proud of. I feel concerned for the environment :-p
