I'm sure some of us are concerned about hair loss, let's share some opinions on various products/regimens and their effectiveness to help prevent it... :fingersxd

Well, I'm starting to lose my hair. :o I've decided to try some Finasteride and see what happens. Something to keep in mind though is that even though there are quite a few hair loss products on the market, only Minoxodyl (sp?) and Finasteride have actually been proven (as in approved by the FDA) to help prevent hair loss and in some cases, regrow hair.

There's always the IGF-1 and the HGH to help regrow hair

As far as I can tell, people like to stick to topicals if possible. This minimizes systemic sides or interactions with other supps/meds. 3 in particular come to mind.

1. Nizoral 2%
- usually in shampoo form, 1% is available over the counter while the 2% requires a prescription

2. Spironolactone 2% or 5%
- works by blocking androgen receptors in the scalp, applied 1-2x daily
- smells like ass, which is why most use it at night

3. Azelaic acid
- blocks nearly 100% of DHT in the area of application

Krzna posted a great article on hair loss prevention/hair regrowth. I'll see if I can track it down later. Also, BigVrunga @ anabolicminds made a thread called Hair Loss Prevention which was about the best thing ever.

The issue of hairloss has been on my mind lately, My dad's brothers are bald on top, and my dad (44yrs old) seems to be loosing hair on top too.

I really don't want to lose any hair, because a shaven/bald look just wouldn't look good on me at all. Plus, I have loads of chicken pox scars on my scalp that would show.

This is going to sound stupid, but I'm sure I heard somewhere that there is some kind of injection which doesn't make hair grow back, but prevents/stops any hairloss.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about ?

MPB (Male Pattern Baldness) gene actually skip a generation and comes from your mothers father. So if your grandad on your mom's side is bald, you will likely have the same problem. Your dad's head has nothing to do with your hairloss.

Hair loss is cause by the build up of DHT (DihydroTestostrone). DHT is created by an enzymatic reaction between I & II 5-Alpha Reductase enzymes with Testosterone. This reation can be blocked using some of the products that have been listed above, with Azelaic Acid being a very strong inhibitor of the type I 5-AR enzyme.

Thanks Murphman!

My grandad on my mothers side still has a good head of hair, and is in his 70's, so I guess I should be ok. Thanks for posting that, it put my mind at rest. :bigthumbu

Supposedly Sawtooth Palmetto (sp?) helps intercept DHT and keep it from binding to hair follicle receptors.

I have heard quite a few people say that they would rather be bald then to use finasteride. They said it killed there libido, and sapped their strength, and made them feel like an old man.

So, just as an addendum to my post, the folks I've talked to who reported hair regrowth while using HGH and IGF have said that after a while of not taking the IGF or GH the hair they regrew fell out again...prevention > cure in this case.
