Recipes: 0 Rep Power: 94 | ANAHEIM, Calif., Apr 20, 2005 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- A study by two Italian universities presented Wednesday suggests green tea catechins, chemicals extracted from green tea leaves, help prevent prostate cancer. The team, from the University of Parma and the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, said only one man in a group of 32 at high risk for prostate cancer developed the disease after one-year's oral administration of green tea catechins. In a control group, 9 of 30 high-risk men developed the disease. "Numerous earlier studies, including ours, have demonstrated that green tea catechins, or pure EGCG (a major component of GTCs), inhibited cancer cell growth in laboratory models," said lead researcher Saverio Bettuzzi. "We wanted to conduct a clinical trial to find out whether catechins could prevent cancer in men. The answer clearly is yes." Bettuzzi said his team had found EGCG targets prostate cancer cells specifically for death, without damaging the benign controls. "EGCG induced death in cancer cells, not normal cells, inducing Clusterin expression" said Bettuzzi. The researchers presented their results Wednesday in Anaheim, Calif., during the 96th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research. Recipes: 0 Rep Power: 94 | Antiangiogenic properties of natural polyphenols from red wine and green tea. Oak MH, El Bedoui J, Schini-Kerth VB. Pharmacologie et Physico-Chimie des Interactions Cellulaires et Moleculaires, UMR CNRS 7034, Faculte de Pharmacie, Universite Louis Pasteur de Strasbourg, F-67401 Illkirch, France. Epidemiological studies have indicated that regular consumption of red wine and green tea is associated with a reduced risk of coronary heart disease and tumor progression. The development of tumors and of atherosclerosis lesions to advanced plaques, which are prone to rupture, is accelerated by the formation of new blood vessels. These new blood vessels provide oxygen and nutrients to neighboring cells. Therefore, recent studies have examined whether red wine polyphenolic compounds (RWPCs) and green tea polyphenols (GTPs) have antiangiogenic properties. In vitro investigations have indicated that RWPCs and GTPs are able to inhibit several key events of the angiogenic process such as proliferation and migration of endothelial cells and vascular smooth muscle cells and the expression of two major proangiogenic factors, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and matrix metalloproteinase-2, by both redox-sensitive and redox-insensitive mechanisms. Antiangiogenic properties of polyphenols have also been observed in the chick embryo chorioallantoic membrane since the local application of RWPCs and GTPs strongly inhibited the formation of new blood vessels. Moreover, intake of resveratrol or green tea has been shown to reduce corneal neovascularization induced by proangiogenic factors such as VEGF and fibroblast growth factor in mice. The ability of RWPCs and GTPs to prevent the formation of new blood vessels contributes, at least in part, to explain their beneficial effect on coronary heart disease and cancer. This review focuses on the antiangiogenic properties of natural polyphenols and examines underlying mechanisms. Ref: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/q..._uids=15629234 |

Recipes: 0 Rep Power: 94 | Antioxidants of the beverage tea in promotion of human health. Siddiqui IA, Afaq F, Adhami VM, Ahmad N, Mukhtar H. Department of Dermatology, University of Wisconsin, Madison, WI 53706, USA. Tea that contains many antioxidants is a pleasant and safe drink that is enjoyed by people across the globe. Tea leaves are manufactured as black, green, or oolong. Black tea represents approximately 78% of total consumed tea in the world, whereas green tea accounts for approximately 20% of tea consumed. The concept of "use of tea for promotion of human health and prevention and cure of diseases" has become a subject of intense research in the last decade. Diseases for which tea drinkers appear to have lower risk are simple infections, like bacterial and viral, to chronic debilitating diseases, including cancer, coronary heart disease, stroke, and osteoporosis. Initial work on green tea suggested that it possesses human health-promoting effects. In recent years, the research efforts have been expanded to black tea as well. Research conducted in recent years reveals that both black and green tea have very similar beneficial attributes in lowering the risk of many human diseases, including several types of cancer and heart diseases. For cancer prevention, evidence is so overwhelming that the Chemoprevention Branch of the National Cancer Institute has initiated a plan for developing tea compounds as cancer-chemopreventive agents in human trials. Thus, modern medical research is confirming the ancient wisdom that therapy of many diseases may reside in an inexpensive beverage in a "teapot."
