Default Exercises to prevent lower back pain

Hey everyone... over the past year or so I have had three 'severe' issues with my lower back where I have experienced incredible pain when twisting/bending/standing up/sitting down/etc. All is fine when standing straight, lying flat, and mostly ok when sitting straight... it's when rolling over, getting up, or twisting that it gets me, and usually on only one side.

I am going to discuss this with my doctor and get it looked into, but also wanted to check with the fine folks at IM regarding exercises, stretching, treatment, and general info as there is much quackery and difference of opinion to be found on the Interwebz these days.

I'm not sure of the source of the trauma or if there is any other injury, but I am basically looking for more info and discussion at this point, as well as suggestions on various stretching and strengthening exercises.

Thanks everyone...

yeah. this is a good one. Also, most believe a weak back can be caused by in-adequate firing of the glutes as well. Most importantly, a STRONG core (abs and obliques) will take some stress off the lower back. Most people with "bad backs" have underdeveloped glutes, abs and hips. It's not the lower back itself, just the lower back's injury due to compensation for these other areas. I used to have chronic back pain through highschool.... as soon as i started doing deadlifts, crunches, squats and GMs, it ALLL went away.
