Recipes: 0 Rep Power: 47 | I really would like to know some different opinions on this, as I have asked many others, and answers varied. The thing I heard that worries me is that I heard if you start working out before you stop growing, your growth will falter. I really hope that's not true, because I want to be 6'+ when I'm older, and i'm only 5'8 right now, but then again, I'm 14, so i still have lots of time to grow, and I drink a gallon of milk a day, so I'm not sure. |

Recipes: 0 Rep Power: 33 | well, i wanted to add emphasis. its good that you are worried about your overall health, and your worried about growing, but you can put your mind to ease. This question is over-asked, and its a rumor that people just wont let die. Do not take the bold, underlined, large size as an offense. I made it that way so that you clearly understand it, and everyone else who reads this thread clearly understands it, and there are no more questions pertaining to this topic. once again, please dont be offended...

| Unpaid Trash Collector | In no way will lifting stunt your growth ..either you are going to be 6ft or you are not. Period... Wanting to be a given hieght will not make it happen. How tall are the rest of the men in your family? |

| Unpaid Trash Collector | It is this simple you are a. going to take the heoght gene of your mother or b. from your father. Working out will in no way effect how tall you are going to be. |

Recipes: 0 Rep Power: 0 | High impact can result in the closing of specific growth plates. Do some searching on pub med under ulnar or radial variance. In this specific case with gymnasts, the premature closure results in one bone in the forearm being longer than the other, causing problems because weight will not be properly distributed. Weight lifting does not cause the same kind of high impact as gymnastics, with their handsprings and such, if done properly. Although I have no hard evidence, it would seem logical that it would be possible for the same type of thing to occur with weight lifting if the person is not careful. I would avoid explosive exercises i.e. cleans with heavy weight, or plate jumps (I would never recommend those anyways). Keep the reps at a moderate level (8-12), do not break form (I would avoid cheat reps, not that they don't have a place but I personally would not recommend them to a youth who was still developing), and like I said maybe avoid high impact exercises. The risk of being 5'4" instead of 6'1" is a little preposterous, but the implications of the studies (if you look them up) is stunting of specific bones, which like I said can cause structural deficiencies, setting oneself up for injuries and life-long problems. |

Well your still growing and will probably get some more height on yourself. I was about 5' 7" when I was 14 and I am only 5'10" now. But it might have been genetics, cause my parents and gramparents are pretty much the same height as me. I would say, still lift and don't worry. Cause as long as you don't workout like a Pro bodybuilder you'll be ok. | |
