Unhappy Adult ADD

This is so me it's not even funny! Anybody have any experience with this?

Do You Have Adult ADD?
by Edward M. Hallowell, M.D., Prevention magazine

Maybe your brain seems like it's here one minute and gone the next. Maybe you can't follow directions that include more than one or two steps. Maybe you lose track of time, or maybe you chronically procrastinate. Maybe you think you're depressed and try to make yourself feel better with alcohol. Or maybe you need many cups of coffee to stay on track all day.

Maybe you're an impulsive overspender. Maybe you liven up everyone you meet, but deep down inside you feel lonely and sad. Maybe you have lots of creative ideas, but you just don't know how to organize them and put them into action.

Well, just maybe you have attention deficit disorder (ADD). Many people have ADD without knowing it because most people still think it's a condition found only in children, particularly boys. So whenever they find themselves wandering from one task to another, they never think it might be ADD.

I Have ADD

I know about ADD. I have it myself, and as a child and adult psychiatrist, I have been diagnosing and treating it for the past 20 years. I thought I'd take this chance to fill you in on some things that could change your life for the better—dramatically and soon.

First of all, having ADD does not mean that you can't pay attention. Just the opposite. People with ADD can often be extremely focused and pay attention better than anyone else at certain times.

Second, having ADD does not necessarily mean that you are hyperactive, or that you were as a child. In fact, many children and adults who have ADD are the opposite of hyperactive; they are quiet and serene.

Third, having ADD does not mean that you are "slow" or got bad grades in school, or can't excel in various arenas. Many people with ADD are extraordinarily talented, successful, and quick.

Edward M. "Ned" Hallowell, M.D., is a child and adult psychiatrist and the founder of The Hallowell Center for Cognitive and Emotional Health in Concord, MA.

Yup. Most of what was highlighted I can relate to. Staying on task is nearly impossible at times. I find my mind jumping from one thing to another without me "meaning" to do it. Procrastination is becoming a serious problem now.

I read good reviews on Nootropics.
Try out some good ones or make your own blend with high dosed stuff like Pricatram or whatever with Alcar and etc.
Its better then ritollyn.
I heard PLCAR works good.

I've actually been diagnosed with ADD 3 different times but I haven't taken anything for it since high school. With my job now though I've been considering it....

Anyone here take either ritalin or adderol? I took ritailin in high school before I got into lifting, I'm curious how these drugs might affect a bodybuilding lifestyle though. I drink coffee all day long at work to help keep me on task but I'm getting pretty sick of the jitters and diuretic effets...

Hey guys!

Thanks for the responses. I'm still reading up on this. Want to be armed before I go to my doc.

This book is very interesting:

Hello Prodigy. Nootropics sound interesting. The closest thing I used to a nootropic is Neurostim, which I am happy with.

I think The Doc has written up on them before. I'm going to search for his posts.

Thanks.

Hey there Drew, I'm just starting to investigate this thing. What originally even caught my attention was an MSN article, go figure. I've never talked to a doc about it. I did visit here ==> http://www.livingwithadd.org/forum/, and do remember seeing discussions regarding those drugs. I believe you could get lots of feedback there.

If I find out that all these years all I needed was a pill, I'm going to be . . . annoyed. So much wasted time.

You take care.

^ Thats a good website. I found another pretty similar to it, http://www.adhdnews.com/forum/default.asp its a forum alot like this one full of (mostly) intelligent people. Lots of discussion on coping methods, meds, therapy, etc.

The one thing I've been told over and over again is that just taking a pill won't solve your problems. If your Dr. just writes the script go to a new Dr. I guess the only way to really deal with ADHD is establishing a plan with a psyciatrist that involves counseling/therapy and meds together, the meds help with the sypmtoms and the therapy/counseling help with actually fixing the problem. If you have ADHD you were born with it and it won't go away, but you can atleast train your brain to deal with it effectively.

...so thats what I've been told atleast....anyways...

Good luck! Let us know how it goes I have an appointment the end of this month for the same thing, we'll see what happens.

I pretty sure that I have adult ADD, but for the most part I manage fine. However in Jan I was at Universal Studios with my son and a friend. We tried out for the Fear Factor Live show. As luck would have it I was the one selected to compete with 5 others.

It was alot of fun and is patterned after the TV show with three stunts you have to participate in. My problem was trying to remember all the instructions they were telling us. The first stunt was you walk out onto a platform and hang on to a pipe like thing. The platform drops out from under you and then the contest is who can hang on the longest.

Well its like 30 feet off the ground and I guess what they told me was to wait behind the gate untill the stunt guy came and hooked me up to the safety wires. Well somehow I missed that part, noticed that everyone else was out on their platforms and thought I should be to. So I force open the gate and walk out. My son and friend noticed immeadiatly that I wasn't hooked up.

Anyways the stunt coordinator say dude your not supposed to be out there yet. Back slowly towards me. I thought oh shit I'm dead. I had walked out on this narrow platform and wasn't connected to the safety wire. Anyways it's a funny story now but my ADD could have been deadly.
