| NGA & IDFA Master Pro | Bodybuilding legends Bill Pearl and Dave Draper gave a seminar last year in Santa Cruz, California and I recently watched a video of this excellent event. (it's available at DaveDraper.com, by the way.) There was some great information presented, as Dave and Bill answered all kinds of questions from the large audience that gathered for the seminar. But Dave's answer to one of the questions in particular is something worth sharing with you. Someone in the audience aksed, "What do you think about the current state of affairs in bodybuilding and the champions we see today and the direction the sport is taking? Here was Dave's reply: "Pro bodybuilding today is a small subculture and only a small representation of the entire body building scene. Today’s pros are the rare few who want to train for competition only and that is their entire life, so they are willing to take the risks that they do and go to the lengths that they have. But the sport has taken on a whole different appearance and set of feelings that go behind it, and its not for the love of the sport and the training so much anymore. I think there is probably less training involved in the big bodies we see today and less involvement in the gym, in the exercise and in the discipline. There’s a lot less of that because it’s achieved through another kind of means – through the use of pharmaceuticals and so forth - and lots of them. So there are so many people who are so disappointed with what we see today – or maybe not ‘disappointed’ because the bodies are amazing and you cant help but be impressed, but it’s not in harmony with our own feelings. When I see the major bodybuilders today, I see them more as NASCAR or extreme sports, where they are going to great extents just to impress the audience and to achieve financial purposes. People aren’t really interested in seeing a normal physique anymore, they want to see the outer limits that a man or woman can take themselves to. It's still impressive, but a lot has been lost along the way. Where is it going to go? It’s been going in this direction a long time and it’s probably going to continue going on this way. How big they are going to get, I don’t know. There’s got to be a leveling off point somewhere, but I said the same thing in 1990 when I looked at Lee Haney and they kept getting bigger. I’m as curious as you are. I miss and I think everybody misses the good old days, they miss bodybuilding the way it was in the 1970s and 1960s and they say they have no more heroes these days and they have no one to look up to and they still love the sport, they’re impressed, but it doesn’t tug at their heartstrings, it doesn’t inspire them anymore. Not to put them down, because they have just dedicated themselves to another expression of the sport, but it almost has nothing to do with real bodybuilding anymore. That’s my point of view." The reason I'm sharing this with you is because I agree with Dave 100%, except on one point.. There ARE heroes and role models to look up to today, and you will find them in the drug-free bodybuilding movement I agree with Dave that the small subculture of bodybuilding which he was referring to will continue to go in the same direction of mass at all costs in order to sell the tickets and wow the audiences. You can't reverse evolution and you cant stop the financial wheels that turn this part of the industry. However, I also believe that another "subculture" of bodybuilding - the TRULY natural bodybuilders - will also continue to grow if only more people become aware of NATURAL bodybuilding and the many heroes and role models involved in the sport The magazines these days may choose only to publicize bodybuilding freaks, but that is the beauty of the Internet. Ultimately, the Net has more potential to spread the message of natural fitness and bodybuilding worldwide, than any single magazine does and if enough of us in the Internet community begin to spread the message and spotlight these TRUE HEROES AND ROLE MODELS, I know the word WILL spread. Please help by passing on this message to anyone you know who would like to hear about some true role models and see those GOOD OLD DAYS of bodybuilding return last week I introduced you to one such role model - His name is Darin Steen. This week, his interview continues on Bodybuilding Secrets.Com -- The home of natural bodybuilding on the web. There are many more interviews to come, including next month's feature with one of the world's top female fitness and figure champions. Here's part two of "The Uncensored Truth About Natural Bodybuilding, With Darin Steen":http://www.bodybuildingsecrets.com/a..._bodybuilding_ part_2.php If the above link is broken or does not work, visit www.bodybuildingsecrets.com/home.php Your comments, feedback and discussion are welcome and appreciated.
