THE GOVERNMENT MIGHT start paying you to exercise. The Personal Health Investment Today bill (House Resolution 5479), introduced in May, would treat the cost of gym memberships and exercise equipment as medical expenses, making them tax deductible for many Americans.

A less focused reporter than me would rant here that America's personal and business tax laws already take up 16,000 pages and cost citizens who wish to order a printed copy more than $1,100. They'd mention how a fair personal income tax scheme — one that takes a bit more from the rich than from the poor — could be written on a single page, but for the insistence of Congress on using tax deductions to pay citizens to live a certain way. (Right now it's lucrative, for example, to be a heterosexual, married, small-business-running homeowner who drives a vehicle weighing more than 6,000 pounds.) They'd probably then urge Congress to separate the job of tax assessment from that of social engineering: Use the tax code as a simple means of raising revenues and pass separate laws providing direct government handouts for "good" behavior, thereby creating a more frank and visible system.

Fortunately, I'm above such pulpiteering. Let's talk instead about Life Time Fitness (LTM: 43.55, +0.38, +0.9%), and how its shares look poised to help you cash in on HR5479 or similar legislation, or on the growing fitness industry in general.
