Default So I'm taking this Exercise Physiology class this semester . . .

and wow! The instructor came out with both barrels. Not even any foreplay.

Check out her very first discussion topic.
How do you feel about athletes using steroids? Please support your opinion.

My response:
I believe that adults should be allowed to make their own decisions as to what they put in their bodies. I won't even address the issue of children since it is obvious for them not to use for the same reasons we don't let them smoke and drink.

The issue of professional sports is a murky one. Obviously, if I had the goal to be a professional athlete, I wouldn't want to be unduly pressured into using drugs just to be in the running. I would have to make a tough decision about what I'm willing to sacrifice to reach my goal to rise to the top and be called "the best." Unfortunately, the public has spoken on what they expect from their professional athletes. We want to see those amazing homeruns and insane tackles, we want to see the freaks on the posing stage (Ronnie's alleged gh gut notwithstanding), we want to see the in-human feats of strength at the strongman events. When the public stops paying to see these things, maybe the insane cycles will, at least, come down to manageable levels. Now in a perfect world with a truly level playing field, maybe drug use would disappear all together, but I highly doubt it. Since we humans aren't anywhere near perfect, there will always be that one person looking for that extra edge and willing to do just about anything to get it.

The risks and rewards for steroid use are well known. Contrary to what the popular media may want to report, it is possible to use performance enhancing drugs safely and sanely if you chose to do so. I know this from personal experience. If someone chooses to not exercise common sense and seek out proper guidance, then they need to be prepared to deal with the consequences. There are many things people do to, or ingest into, their bodies to effect changes in its appearance and function. Why should steroids be any different?

And for God's sake, don't start a cycle if you don't have your PCT lined up and ready to go. Sheesh!

Nice reply South Cali... whatever your decision about using performance enhancing drugs.. that's a great answer.

I bet your instructor wasn't expecting a reply like that!

EME: Thanks, I tried to formulate an intelligent response even though I'm by no means an expert on the subject. I was doing it on the sly at work so I only got to quickly scan the other responses, but out of about 5 or 6 ,only 1 was absolutely against the use of steroids under any circumstances. I would love to be a fly on the wall when she hits menopause and is begging her doc for just a little bit of Test.

Powerman: BWAHAHAHAHAA!!! You know . . . foreplay . . . maybe a little warm-up question to get our juices flowing, er, I mean to get our thinking-caps on before hitting us with such a controversial subject.

Talking

Come on now Game. You know how we do it. I worked it into my student introduction post:

Quote:
I am taking this class because I enjoy bodybuilding/fitness as a hobby (started in 1981) and want to explore it as a possible career change. I had originally wanted to major in Kinesiology when I entered the U of MD back in 1982, but was derailed by parents.

I want to pursue a certification by the end of the year, and hopefully use it to get my foot in the door somewhere. I'm really hating my boring office job right now.

I am originally from MD, but ended up staying in CA when I separated from the Air Force back in 89.

I spend a lot of time here ==> http://www.ironmass.com.
It's a pretty good site and the forum is growing. Lots of cool people there (including competitors and veteran enthusiasts) who are willing to share their knowledge and experiences.
