Default Personal Bests

I was just curious to see how many of you hit personal best's every time you hit the gym. Lately I have been but it's not always the case. Do you feel like your making progress if your not beating your old marks?

It depends for me. When I'm cutting it is normal for me to lose some strength. I still consider this a success if I am losing BF in the process. If we all hit personal bests each time we went to the gym, those of us who have been training for 10+ years should all be squatting, deadlifting, and benching more than the world records for those lifts by now. My real benchmark for progress is muscle growth and body composition.

What if I lift more for strength than I do for size?

Should I judge by weight improvements, or size?

All depends what you're looking for, silent_circus. Getting big & cut and getting strong isn't exactly the same thing.

I'm like johnsbod. But on top of that, I hit my natural limit a year or 2 ago, so strength was the only thing I was able to increase, at the expense of definition. I'm sure I could get much stronger naturally, at the expense of size.

Well that was nothing Emax LMG wasn't able to fix. And boy am I ever glad I waited until I hit my genetic potential before doing this. While on Emax I hit PBs all the time. Now, it's never.

I agree with cutting part but if your not adding set's or reps how are you getting muscle growth?

If I'm not adding sets or reps that doesn't meant my muscles aren't growing (when I'm not cutting). I don't believe that muscle growth directly correlates to weight lifted. It's about tearing down and rebuilding muscle tissue mainly IMO. Increasing reps and lifts is certainly what I strive for in each workout, but I don't consider my workouts failures if I don't get there each time.

I totally agree with johnsbod, when I cut for competition I lose some strength but I make up for it in dropping BF%, Im not too worried bout how much I can lift for a set amount, Im more concerned about peak contraction and getting the most out of my workout other than lifting a tonne of weight without proper form. Perfect form and peak contraction is the key to getting anywhere in this sport

If I get an extra rep on an exercise from week-to-week, I consider it a PR.

ayep! Last week I did a 1 x 275 x 3 deep squat and the week before that I did 1 x 275 x 2 not so deep. I counted both as PRs (or PBs) because I couldn't do that before.

Next week it will be 2 x 280 x 2 (or 3) squat and I make a new PR. Currently, I am going for strength. When I get to 300, I am going to back off and go for hypertrophy. I use 2-3 working sets x 4-8 reps for hypertrophy on squats. I will consider those personal bests when I get to 275 lbs x 4-8.

A long winded way of saying "I agree".
