Default HOCKEY TEAM PLYO vs. SPEED and the CONJUGATE METHOD

On fridays, our team's ME lower day, the hockey team's training hours overlap with ours in the gym. Their workouts on that day include some plyometric work, agility training, and bench press. They also do their long jumps measurements (from a stationary position). After watching them lay out the measuring tape and having everyone on their team do them, i found it humoring. Of course, it was the first time I had ever really seen anyone do it live... so I didn't know what was "good" or "average." Most of the players were measuring a leap of about 80-90 inches. After we were done our working and the hockey team had left, I asked some of the guys if they wanted to do it with me. Of course, as they were also very humored by the display put on by the hockey team earlier, they came over to the other side of the gym with me. I went first.... 88. I was happy. I though I'd embarass myself... thinking the hockey players would be acceptional at it. Then our 198 went.... 95. Followed by dan, our 220.... 103. Last went Corey, our 275+ (330 to be exact).... 121 inches.

So what is the deal? Why are we better at it then the hockey players? Are should they be training conjugate? I mean... plyometric work is proven, but maybe their lower body resistance training... if there is any in their routine, is less than optimal. Why is it that division 1 teams are training using less than optimal strategies. I mean, WTF. Does it ever occur to them WHY our 198lb guy squats 200lbs more than their 198lb guy? Granted, we train to have a strong squat... but with the strong squat comes a strong leap... and with strong leaps comes more explosive skating....

is there any hockey players who are above 198? if so I would guess them being lighter then your 220, and 275+ guys and having less muscle to work with would lead them to lower jumps.

yeah, but he is talking about his college's team, not a pro player, who would have considerably more years under his belt and more musculature.

Long jump is all about leg power. Most hockey players train legs with higher reps and for speed. I'm willing to bet the 330lb guy squats more than 2 of the players combined.

A lot of teams/schools don't have very good training programs for players. At the pro level, a majority do use O lifts however.
