Michael.. I am sorry to hear about your injury... I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers on Monday... just make sure when you go into the rehab to do what they tell you to do.. and dont go off and try things on your own.. like someone I know did ( Me ) and risk a tear again... I did that when I tore my ab's... and had to have surgery again...

I know you will be back completely... better than ever.. best of luck on Monday...

Sorry to hear about your injury bro.. I tore my bicep, last year, and it is better than ever now.. It took a long ass time to heal 9 months.. I was unfortunate enough to tear it in the worst possible spot.. I didn't even hurt it training either... I kept a lot of size by doing heavy leg work. tons of squats... Mondays, and Thursdays.. I did close, medium, and wide stance squats....

Good advice PJ... I did the same thing, but luckily didn't require surgery...

The Ortho told me not to do any upper body work, and after a couple months I said to myself "you don't use your bicep when you bench press" So I did some low weight high rep bench presses.. flat, and incline.. no problem.. did it again the next week no problem.. then figured OK the doc was just being over cautious.. and after doing a few warm up sets, loaded up the bar with a decent amount of weight... as I was bringing the bar down to my chest I felt a searing pain where the tear was... it felt like someone touched it with a hot wire... needless to say I am sure it added a couple months to my rehab.. prior to that I didn't feel any pain until I tried to lift something, after that it hurt all the time for a couple months..... Live, and learn I guess...

Thanks for all the advice.

I'm going to stay strictly to my rehab program.

Trust me, it was pretty traumatic to me to feel and hear that pec rip off. I don't want to ever feel that again.

I hope that I'll be able to do some isolation exercises for the Bi's and Tri's during my rehab period... and the doc already said I'll be able to hit legs and cardio.... but probably machines only... no squats for quite a while.

I'll probably come up with a system where I alternate quads, hamstrings, and calves on the machines, 3-4 days per week.

I'll probably go in on Kendra's training days and sit over on the machines and do drop sets and high reps and try to kick start some new growth there.

Thank you for your experiences and advice. Rehabilitation training is a new frontier for me.

The scary part is that you said you were feeling good, and strong, and that everything was going well when it happened. I always thought muscle tears would occur when you had a pre existing injury...

Didn't you say that you had some pain while doing certain bench presses???
I think I remembered you saing you avoided something because you felt pain your arm pit area, or chest or something.... Am I right?????

Yes,

I had pulled the muscle in the same area that tore several months before while doing incline bench.

The pull was nothing like this tear though. Just a sharp pain when benching that was slightly sore for a few days afterward.

After the initial pull, I took a few weeks off from any heavy chest, quit doing bench press or incline press, and switched over to entirely dumbbells for chest.

Over the past two to three months I slowly worked up to heavy weights again.

I have just continued to get stronger and stronger over the past few months with no new idication of any problem. Just a week ago I did dumbbell presses with 115's with no problems at all.

But, obviously there was something that hadn't completely healed and I hit it just right to cause it to tear when training this week.

I will worry now every time I curl.... It must have been tramatic having that happen.... My Father had a complete bicep tear a few years back at his work.. It looked weird seeing his bicep balled up at the top of his arm... He is not bothered by anything, and I am sure it shook him up...

It's not something I will ever forget. I can promise you that.

I will probably think about it on every chest rep for a LONG, LONG time, if not the rest of my life.

We had our annual district NPC meeting today. While there, I got to talk with several other competitors who have had some major injuries, and discussed the whole rehab process.

None had torn a pec, but I talked quite a bit with National level female bodybuilder Sherry Smith ( 1st HW USA's 2004, 2nd in 2005 ) who tore her bicep at the the same attachment point ( armpit ).

We talked about the rehab process and what to expect when I'm able to hit the weights again.

It will be a long road, but she assured me that it all comes back.

Thanks again for the support bubba g.

i dont think its related to this injury because you have a complete rupture of the distal tendon and not in the belly of the muscle. i suspect your first tear was in the belly of the muscle. secondly ruptures at the proximal origin (tendon) of the muscle are not common

Just a week ago I did dumbbell presses with 115's with no problems at all.

those are some heavy dbs lifts wow! i think it was just a freak accident.

But, obviously there was something that hadn't completely healed and I hit it just right to cause it to tear when training this week.

i suppose weakening the muscle (partial tear) may have contribute to overburdening the tendon. most likely just caused by excessive force

In conjunction with a good physical therapy program and given your age I think you will be back w8t lifting pain-free in 3-to-4 months (prob 3 or less). sling for 4 weeks postoperative and 3 months of aggressive rehab. I think this is better then muscle belly tears which seem to haunt bb'ders/athletes (much more common). those type of tears are difficult to recover from. in your case they are going to make an inscion under the arm and reattach the tendon with 5-6 suture anchors. I think you will be as good as new after once they fix you up!

good luck brother
