Rep Power: 0 Steve MacD is on a distinguished road
Default Utah strongman pro qualifier

This is about the best time I've ever had at any contest, great competitors, great contest, perfect weather, even a comfortable hotel bed. No complaints about anything really. Well there was that dirty, pebble covered 5th stone, but I'll talk about that later.

1st event, tire and hummer medley.
800 lb tire for 5 flips, 1100 tire for 1 flip, full size Hummer for 50 feet backwards.
Took 5th on this first event, felt pretty good, would have liked to have owned that 1100 tire a little more but it was heavy, and I think the extremely square tread made it a little more difficult to "roll" the tire over the top. I need to find me a super heavy tire like that one. Finished in 53 seconds, best time was Don Pope at 47 something.

2nd event, max Log Press
Very tough log, I'm almost positive it was more than 12", sure did feel like it, and it was 250 bare, which somehow changes the overall feel of the log. Legs were fried from the medley and it's really tough to press overhead with no reference point, there wasn't a cloud in the sky and all you could see was a big sea of blue. You'd be surprised how that throws you off. Not really happy with 330, but just about everybody was dissapointed with thier own performances so nothing to stress about I guess.

3rd event, Deadlift
Got though the first three (650,700,750) with ease, gave 800 a tug but decided it wasn't really worth tearing my back up to gain at most 2 pts, (since Kevin Nee was the only one to get the 800 so far, and I was quite sure the guys going after me were not going to get 800 on this day). I might have been able to grind it out but like I said, why rip up my back with 2 events to go just for pride. Sometimes you gotta be smart and trade the pride for the gameplan. Moved up to 3rd place after this event and was feeling pretty good about things.

4th event, Frame carry, 800 lbs
Frame is easily my favorite forward moving event, not sure why but it just feels much better to me than farmers or yoke. Finished the course with no drops and I was really happy with my grip, this was the first time in my contest history that I felt my grip slipping and was able to hold on by really concentrating on squeezing for all I was worth. Not a super fast time but good considering that I feel that forward moving events are my most glaring weakness.

5th event, stones
First 4 stones went very easy and my time was pretty quick, then I got to the last stone, and it was just covered with little pebbles and dust. It didn't feel heavy at all and I've done much heavier stones in training. This was my only mental error of the day, I should have glopped some extra tacky on my upper arms for the last stone but I didn't, so I have to live with only getting 4 stones. Obviously I won't do that again.

I'm happier than you can imagine to place where I did and finally live up to my own expectations. However I know there are still things I can do to get better. I think I can improve quite a bit with our new training facility, which is going to make events day much more effective, I'm going to spend more time on prehab and stretching, and there were some things I had to do before this contest that I'm sure had an effect on me (putting on the Pgh strongest man for instance). I did a much better job this time of keeping my calories high and I really concentrated on staying fully hydrated on contest day and the 3 to 4 days before, but I still made some mistakes which I will seek to improve in upcoming contests.

Random notes of the day.
Got to hand it to Kevin Nee, he had a terrible first event and was way behind, but he got his head on straight and battled back all day up to 4th and I only edged him out by 1 point at the end of the day. We continued our head to head battle later that night at Van's house with a bottle of 151. Let us not speak of this again.

Van did the greatest job ever of organizing and taking care of his athletes. All kinds of fruits, water, powerade, great transportation everywhere, a great cookout afterwards, just excellent all the way around.

Utah is truly beautiful, get there if you have a chance.

On to Nationals!!! I can hardly wait to heal up and get back to training.

Awesome update Steve! Congrat's on the comp sounds like you did very well and were right up there with the top dogs. I'm sure with a bit more seasoning and work you'll be the guy the others are chasing. Kick ass at the nationals!!
