Default How does a bench shirt work?

How does a bench, or deadlift and squat suits work? Like bench, is it true that you PULL the weight down to touch the chest and push it up? I just don't understand how these shirts/suits add a large amount of weight to someones lift.

They were meant to help prevent injury during heavy lifting. It pretty much squeezes the shit out of you. It won't put a whole amount of weight onto your lift, for smaller guys it can.

A bench shirt puts your arms in a forward position. As you lower the bar, you're moving your arms away from that position. so the shirt helps you get back into the arms straight out position.

Depending on what shirt you have compared what weight you are using, it is possible that you actually have to pull the bar to get it to touch your chest.

It takes some practice to learn to use a shirt - it's not like you'll put one on and immediately see a jump in your bench. I've heard of lifters gaining as little as 30 lbs. and as much as 300 lbs. to their raw bench when using a shirt.

(Squat and Deadlift suits are similar, except they try to keep up in an upright position.)

It's a size 48, too small for most people. Would work for someone to abotu 160 pounds, and that even depends on chest size.

It's a big ol' rubber band. As you lower it the shirt stretches out, and it tightens to not only help rebound the weight but also apply pressure to the body like a lifting belt does. As you push up it releases the energy.

Sometimes the shirts are stiff enough that the weight won't touch your chest. Then you have to pull it.
