Default Before you do your max...

What is running through your mind before you do your max out set? Also do you have a "routine" you do before your lift?

When I max, which is the end of a cycle, I go through a lot of things. I gotta get myself in a "rage" mood, entirely. I spend about 1/2 hour watching motivational lift videos, listening to audio that gets me pumped up, and then I go out to the gym quickly, get in, and think "RAGE!". It might sound funny, but it gets my ambition going (to get stronger) and gets me in the mood.

As one might think, I go through the lift in my mind. I imagine myself completing the lift. I concentrate on exactly what I am doing and if I have failed in the past for any particular thing that I executed incorrectly then I pay even more attention to that.

One of the many things I enjoy about PLing is how I can be on the lifters platform with 100 people in front of me and I am so focused on what I am doing that I literally don't see anyone. I am completely oblivious to everything around me and THAT is being in the "zone".

Everytime before I hit my Max Weight for the day, I always say a prayer. I also get myself pumped up just a little bit!

my normal preparation for a max, is to stand infront of what ever im going to do, and stare, silently stare for about 2 mins. during those 2 mins, i let every angering thought run thru my head...and then i think of someone telling me that ill never make it, and ill never get any bigger.....then i get right to it...

Thats interesting because I know many if not most people actually try to imagine that the plates are hollow and therefore very light. They end up convincing themselves they can do it easily and that the weight is extremely light. I think Bill Kazmier did this, but not sure.

That is the approach I take. I can easily tune out the world and almost have an out-of-body experience. The lift becomes a subconcious autonomic effort and the feeling is like being hypnotized. I do not "feel" substantially the magnitude of the weight.

I was with ya Beast, all the way up until you said "I do not "feel" substantially the magnitude of the weight."

I can't say that myself.

I agree. I certainly feel it, but I usually take a minute or two and stare at the weight before I lift it and get myself physically and mentally pumped up for the lift. I feel it plenty, but I attack the weight.
