I'm not saying most women don't care... because that would be a lie. I'm saying the type of woman who cares about how one dresses is different from one who does not. Stereotyping is a mechanism we use to feel comfort and control. To say you can judge a person by their clothing selection and appearance is fine... if you want to fit into the vast majority of our population; perpetuating strange habits within the game we know as dating.

It's all about what type of person one is trying to attract. But, sadly, for the majority of the population, social norms, mores and expectations have been set at a specific level dictated by advertisment.

I hate being such a bitter bastard sometimes lol....

We actually spent a weird amount of time on this subject in my US History 2 class... about mass marketing, pop culture, how it's spread to global reach.... actually I remember studying this in communications class as well.

We are all bent to the will of marketing executives so that we can claim some type of social norm. Our freedom of expression is not our own, it is a choice of available expressions...

I'm a double major: Professional golf management and (of course) sociology with a concentration in gender studies

As a side note, my PGM degree is mostly marketing and advertisment... so i'm getting pretty good at putting together the pieces.

I am by NO means an expert on the subject... but I go to a school with a lot of normally aculturated males and females. I watch their little dance all day long. I have partaken, but find it lame and repeatative. The girls are conformist blobs of the male ideal archtype, and the guys... the same. I find it intresting when I meet girls who don't care that I wear crappy jeans, a used white T and a cumby sportcoat.

I both agree and disagree with this thread.

I feel very strongly that we, as a society, tend to believe that the 'nice guy' can't get the girl, because girls are attracted to jerks. Well, as detailed earlier, confidence is very attractive, and controlling, demanding guys tend to be significantly more confident than the general 'nice guy.'

'Nice guys' also love to hand over the power in the relationship right away. If you tell a girl "Hey, I was just calling to ask you if you might possibly be available on friday night, and if you were if you'd want to maybe go to Applebees for a beer with me, but if you're busy that's fine, I understand" versus "Hey, I'm going out for a couple beers on Friday at Applebees, if you care to join me I might just buy you one, too." The first message says 'hey, I'm not good enough for you, you could do better', the second one says 'I'm definately worthy of you, and I'm willing to give you a shot to prove yourself to me. If not, I'm confident enough not to waste my time.' The second tosses the ball in her court, and gives her the opportunity to toss it back, and opens up the discussion for playful flirting. "I dunno, sounds tempting, but I just might be more apt to go if someone offered to pick me up..." etc.

This leads me into my main point: Anyone, woman, man, mom, co-worker, etc... will communicate with you in the manner by which the wish to be addressed. If they call you up to chat, they want you to chat with them. If they buy you little gifts, they want you to buy little gifts/suprises for them. If they want to touch/snuggle, they want you to reciprocate. If they tease you, tease them back. This works for arguing as well, if someone likes to sit down and reason through something, they won't even listen to you if you start yelling. If they yell and throw things, I'm not saying you ought to throw things back, but they probably won't think you understand them, or will think you're not even angry back if you're sitting there calmly.

I guess the point I'm trying to drive home is that being observant will ultimately get you farther with someone than all the best laid plans for game spitting will.

As far as dressing goes, yes, it's important to dress for success, but at the same time, if you're not being yourself, it's just false advertising, and as soon as you get past the non-judgemental phase of your relationship, they're going to figure that out. Also, when you're dating, opposites attract. When you're married, opposites attack. In a long term relationship, all your similarities (not necessarily likenesses, but compatable areas) are like money in the bank. All your oppositions become like credit card debt.

I do also agree that being happy helps. Not that you can't express negative emotion, but no matter how much of a pessimist your woman may be, nobody likes a negative nancy. If you are continually negative, it'll bring the people around you down too. You begin losing friends, which perpetually increases your depression/angst, which can terminate your relationship. When they begin to always expect the worst around you (or you them), when you/they become different people around you, and you can't be civil to each other, that relationship is going to crash and burn without help. If you can drag yourself out of a funk, put on a happy face, and hopefully salvage the situation, you might be able to turn it around, and that will hopefully make it easier for you to drag yourself out of your funk as well. Our life situations impact us, and we impact our partners.

Also, if you're desperate for a woman, they can sense it. That's why, when you have a job/SO, everybody wants you. When you're unemployed/single, if nobody else is taking a chance on you, why should they? Going out with the idea of 'I'm going to find myself a girlfriend', you have more at risk, and you're going to present yourself differently. We can smell it. Don't be creepy or overbearing. Waiting three days to contact us just makes us forget about you and move on. We don't care what you're 'packing', telling us about your member isn't sexy. And if it is, maybe that might not be the kind of woman you want to bring home to Mommy.

He's right, pick up lines don't work, except to possibly get a laugh. I like challenging questions, such as "Okay, I need your opinion on this, are Mogwai subject to daylight savings time?" or bringing a sketchbook/homework/pet with you. Something that give a woman/man an 'excuse' to talk to you. If I'm interested in talking to someone/being talked to, I just show up at the venue of choice, and make sure I have something unique that can be commented on.

I also agree that you can't set your standards too high. If I kept to my standards, I'd still be waiting for David Duchoveny to call me. Even if you know you're not romantically interested in someone, but they're a decent friend, who knows, maybe they'll have a hot friend.

So, be available, be observant, and be confident. Don't stress yourself out. And no matter what, there is no recipe for success, and there are always other fish in the sea.
