| Der Leutnant | I'm really curious to find out exactly when everyone knew it was time to compete. I know I'm close, because every time I ponder the idea i get really stressed out and start becoming really picky about my overall physique. I always feel like i should just wait a few years, but everyone I run into believes I'm ready. I just feel like I'd be wasting great God-given musclebuilding genetics if I never do....not to sound cocky....but I've never considered myself a hardgainer. I'd really like a few comments on anyone who's ever been in my current position.

Back in the days when I first began training, you could still catch bodybuilding on ESPN. There were a couple shows that ran regularly... one was called American Muscle I believe. They would also broadcast big NPC shows from time to time.. I remember watching the NPC Jr. Nationals and the Nationals back in 1987 on ESPN. I remember seeing Shawn Ray's posing routine when he won the Nationals in 1987, and that was it. I knew I wanted to get on stage too. There was an NPC show taking place about 30 miles away from my home town in the summer of 1988, and I just decided I was going to do it. Back then there was no Novice Class, and No Teen Class...no Natural shows that I knew of. So, I was in the Open Class right from the beginning. It was a big learning experience for me, but I really enjoyed it. The only way to learn how to compete is get up there and do it. Competing is much different than training. The only way you are going to get better and really learn what it's about is to get on stage and do it. I say go for it now. With the Teen and Novice classes in the NPC now, and all the Natural shows around, it's much easier to get started in bodybuilding now than it was when I started. - EME

Recipes: 0 Rep Power: 35 | I have been working out since i was 13, and i just finally got tired of hearing from EVERYONE "man you ought to compete" so when i moved to paducah and started working out at golds gym everyone that approached me ask me if i competed, and when i said no they all said man your stupid you need to get on stage, well at age 30 i finally got on stage and been loving it since, i have always followed bodybuilding, and actually when i was in the army my local gym had a little in gym contest and i won it so that kinda got me thinking about it, but i wasn't until years later and hearing everyone get on me that i finally decided to do it, and so far ive done 3 shows and nationals this year will be my fourth show, so ive come a long way in just a few shows but i believe it was that i waited soooooo long before getting on stage, if i had it to do all over again i would have competed at about age 25 or so, but another factor in my decision was that i didn't want to do super supplements, and i didn't want to compete in a natural show, so at age 30 i finally decided to bite the bullet and go for it!!!!!!!!!! |

| Der Leutnant | thanks guys. one thing i ahve going for me is the fact that i'm fairly young....only 21. waiting a few years wouldn't be horrible....but i think i'm gonna "bite the bullet" as b-boy said and give the Mr. Buffalo a shot in April 2007. by then i should be 245 offseason and cut down to 200-215 for the show. thanks for the advice guys....

| Mushroom Cloud Laying.... | Damn you are young Schroeder... I thought you were atleast 24. I say you could do some damage in 2007. Keep bulking and see what happens. I was going to compete this year, but it wasn't the time. it is hard for me to take lifting too serious right now with my school and work schedule. Soon I will be able to take things a lot more seriously. I will compete very soon. Just don't know exactly when.

| New Member | i dont compete, then again im only 17. But the thought has seriously crossed my mind. Either competing in bodybuilding, or becoming a male model. That would be cool to, be up in places like kohls in my underwear having every woman that walks by take a second glance. and those thoughts all started when my brother walked into a store and saw his own senior picture hanging up on a wall, he didnt even know it was there till he walked in. and i look exactly like my brother, just alot more muscularly built.
