Default Competition Judging

How exactally are competetions judged? I know Teen judges are more looking for the best contest prep, but one might arise the question that a person might walk on stage just 30lbs heavier than the next biggest guy and "decent" shape (water depleted, carb loaded, but still has some fat on glutes/lower back). Would this guy have a shot at winning?

I know this is an outta-the-blue / outta-the-question type question ... just getting myself prepared for 2007, that's all .

Hey Sholiz,

Physique competitions are judged on three main criteria:

Symmetry
Muscular Development
Definition

The competitor with the best combination of all three aspects above should win.

Competitors are not technically given points for certain bodyparts nor do they have points "taken away" for lagging parts.

Rather, the judges rank each person in total appearance from 1 to X, depending on how many competitors are in the class.

If there are 5 competitors in a class, a score of "1" would win that round, and "5" would be for last place.

The competitor with the lowest score after the end of all scored rounds will win.

Typcially, there are anywhere from 5-10 judges and the single highest and single lowest scores from each round are dropped, to try to eliminate any impartial judging.

So, to try to answer your question....

If one guy is smaller, but very symmetrical and ripped... while another guy is larger, but out of proportion and not as cut, the smaller guy should win.

If two guys are both ripped and symmetrical, but one is significantly larger then the larger guy should win.

It all comes down to who had the best total combination of the three aspects listed above.

However, if the judges are going to lean in any particular direction, it's USUALLY in the direction of definition and even development over just total size.

Hope that helps! Let me know if you need any more help.

True, the last show I went to the lightweight won the overall title, because his symmetry and conditioning were awesome, as well as his posing. He had the whole crowd behind him, which I believe is important too.
