Best of luck to you MOP!!! A word of advice though: Don't concern yourself with maintaining your bodyweight, go ahead and do a hardcore cut, then bulk. Just bite the bullet and get small, then add size while maintaining a low BF. Think of it as setting the stage for the long-term. If you're hellbent on keeping your weight up, you will probably just spin your wheels trying to drop body fat and you won't build mass either... recomping is very inefficient, if even possible at all.

Don't mean any disrespect... but I have to disagree, although what you are saying about a recomp may be difficult, at best, in the short term if there's a lot to do. But, over the last two years, I've done a recomp, starting at over 35% BF, now down to where I'm at. The lowest weight I was at was 216. Now I'm staying right around 220-225, and between January and March dropped 3 BF percentage points, maintaining that same weight range, and adding a good deal of mass. Recomp is certainly not a myth... doing a hard core cut and sacrificing too much muscle mass is not worth it, to me, anyway. For what it's worth (I realize there are as many theories on how to do this, but this has worked for me) Keep your protein intake up - 1 to 1.5 grams per lb of body weight, drop the carbs below 100 grams a day (the vast majority taken during morning meals and lunch) and get the rest of your calories via good fats. Have 1 carb reload day a week, and drop the fat calories way down.

I believe that if I can keep my diet clean, I can drop bodyfat easily. I don't really care that much if my bodyweight drops though, as long as I get leaner and stronger. I just wanna see how much will power I have on my diet, as that is my downfall.

I have to agree with this methodology. After spinning my wheels for so long you start to really see just 'why' they say you can either cut or bulk and not in between. The results are superior.

But on the other hand, I think you'd benefit more by a lot of heavy lifting with hiit. You don't really want to get any smaller. I think you'd do better by filling out a little bit more before cutting, but just my opinion.

What not both -- but separately?

You have from April to November. Bulk and then start cutting 12 to 16 weeks out.

That's what I did for my contests and it worked like a charm. I definitely ended up with more lean mass than when I began -- about 8 lbs of it.

Anyhoo -- best wishes to you in the IMPC MOP!!

I understand where Madman is coming with the 'either bulk or cut' mindset, but leaning out while maintaing weight/muscle mass isn't as HARD as he makes it. Both of us are younger then Madman, so for us to do it, it probably is easier for us to do. I think you should go for both, maintain while trying to lower bf% and then all out cut.

That being said, I'm probably going to attempt to do what madman did last year, cut for all of IMPC

If you bulk for three months and then cut for three, you will achieve a much better result then if you attempt to recomp for six months... that is part of the madman gospel. Sure your body composition can be improved over time without cycling your training, but how much time are you willing to take to get to your goals?

It also depends on your goals I guess... for me, I want to get down below 5% body fat and I would consider it a fools errand to try and recomp my way down to that level. Recomping from 25% BF to 20%... sure, it can be done; recomping from 12% to 6%... not gonna happen for 99.9% of the population.

I completely agree with Madman on this one. I'm of the mindset that recomping is a subpar way to train for something like this. Bulk for three, cut for four.. ripped city there you be!
