Recipes: 0 Rep Power: 158 | for the first time in my life, I do not plan on buying any of the next gen systems... ![]() I was looking at the graphics (on the back of the boxes) for 360 games, and they look pretty surrealistic.... but I'm predicting the console industry is about to hit a nose. My prediction is that we're going to see something similar to what happened in the 80s. Only instead of the market being saturated with crap, it's going to be saturated with too much of the same thing. I'm actually predicting that Arcades and Arcade games will start to grab a better hold, followed by an uprising of independent game developers who will ultimately reforge the industry and become the next generation of Game Studio powerhouses. edit: Kinda cool how your one line of text put me on a theoretical rampage.

I've been an avid gamer since the days of PONG (showing my age a little) and Atari. The industry has grown exponentially and is bigger than the movie industry. I really don't see it going away anytime soon. I do somewhat agree in that they are putting these consoles out a little fast but they are not crap. I know a little something about this and the 360 is somewhere around 24 months more advanced than the best PC you could build. I will say they rushed it's development (pre Christmas release) and it shows with the amount of problems that some are seeing. I do feel they will address this though.

Recipes: 0 Rep Power: 158 | no, it's not the hardware that's going to cause a slump. The hardware is fantastic. It's the software. 90% of games are rushed through buearatic hogwash, many are buggy, some are incomplete, and almost all of them have NOTHING INNOVATIVE. They're putting more effort into the graphics and graphics programming than they are they are things like player control and content. Every game is a rehash. Over and over and over. I know a bit about this too. It is my ultimate goal to become a pro game developer/senior program. That's why i'm taking the classes I am in school, and that is what i've devoted a huge part of my life to. I've talked with a befriended a lot of pro game developers before getting into the fitness 'scene' so I take a much different view when looking at the industry as a whole.

To add to this theory it takes a little time for the developers to get a handle on the hardware and learn to maximize it. Look at the Splinter Cell series of games on XBOX. All use the same tech but the third installment blows the original out of the water. The problem is that when they finally get a handle on it new systems are released and the cycle begins again.

Recipes: 0 Rep Power: 158 | I don't think it's so much getting a handle on the API's features, most game studios will license a 3rd party engine (sort of like unreal3 as you were saying, which... some cost upwards of 50,000 for a license). The real problem is rushed deadlines, and overly strict design documents that allow no creativity. Any and all independent games are vastly superior in this sense, and because of licensing issues on consoles, independent games are for the most part only available via PC. Next time there is an indie game conference or contest, check out the top winners. You might be surprised. (I forget the name of the organization that holds them, otherwise I'd link you up).
