| Soldier In Progress | The buck 50 writers from FLEX and Muscle and Fitness seem to think you need to eat 10,000 calories a day and the dietary allowance of 5 Big Mac's a day to put on an ounce of muscle, in turn putting on 10lbs of fat.

Recipes: 0 Rep Power: 10 | for me its an excuse to eat alot of good stuffs without gaining as much fat as i normally would. (and gaining more muscle) not big macs, i mean like baked zitis, diner breakfasts, stuff like that. if you get stretch marks easily though its not worth it. |

Recipes: 0 Rep Power: 51 | Extremist Measure, A controlled bulk allows you train heavier and build more overall muscle than you can when trying to build muscle while staying very lean. Some people are blessed with genetics that allow them to continue to build quality muscle with just a minimal caloric surplus, but most of us have to allow our bodyfat % to go up somewhat in order to really make progress in the mass building department. Now, I'm not saying it's necessary to baloon up and get fat, but you sometimes have to give up some of your cuts temporarily if you really want to pack on the mass. Here is an example of my mass building progress over the last year. As you can see, I made a net gain of about 11-13 pounds of true lean muscle between June '04 and April 2005. That would be significant for anyone, but it's especially significant when you consider that I have been training for over 20 years, and I'm no longer experiencing any beginner gains. When done correctly, a controlled bulking phase can really help you build muscle. BUT, it has to be done with just as much discipline as your cutting phase to be truly effective. - EME
