By Heavy Metal, I mean traditional or pure Heavy Metal. This excludes subgenres such as Death, Black, Speed and crossovers such as Thrash and Metalcore, etc. Personally, I don't know a lot of good heavy Metal bands but have recently been getting into Black Sabbath and bloody love it. Listening to TYR as I post this.

I hate to be a total stickler here, but I should just point out that several of Black Sabbath's early releases were Doom Metal (way ahead of their time), early Metallica was thrash (now they're modern rock), Accept is heavy metal, though it has a lot of power elements, similarily WASP is heavy metal but it has a lot of hardrock elements (same with Scorpions and Twisted Sister), and Venom is debateable.. Some would even call it black/speed. :P Anyway, as for my list..

yeah... lol.. I am a music addict. I've spent thousands of dollars on cds and records.

EDIT: What i'm curious is what is everyones favourite label? Mine USED to be Nuclear Blast, and I don't even have to explain why.. But now i'd probably say Dark Essence Records. Small lineup, but extremely solid.
Aeternus, Hades Almighty, Helheim, Malsain, Nidingr, and Taake.. I love these 7 bands a lot.

Good list bro, but just so you know Anthrax is acutally Speed/Thrash/Groove Metal (dependent on which era), and Manowar is, along with helloween, probably the first act recognized as a power metal act.

Hm, no offense but the reason "lots more good bands yet to be mentioned." is because lots more good bands aren't heavy metal. It was specified by the thread creator he isn't looking for power metal acts, thrash acts, speed acts, progressive acts, black acts, doom acts, and so on, but heavy metal and nwobhm acts.

Regardless though, those are all good bands you listed (though I havn't a clue what MSG stands for, I listen to way too much to be able to use acronyms, for example it could even be the goregrind band misanthrophic septic garglars), but I should point out that Slayer is Thrash Metal (unless you're talking about the british NWOBHM band Slayer, in which case major props to you for knowing who they are, but if you mean the American band who produced greats like Hell Awaits and Reign in Blood, it's a thrash band), Metal Church on the otherhand though is heavy metal, with elements of thrash and power, and then Sepultura is a death/thrash act, or a groove/hardcore act depending on what album.

Wow!! Those are some hot chicks. LOL.

I can't believe I forgot poison... I was wracking my brain trying to think of every stupid hair band that I loathed in high school. I was a metallica man... all the way and old school stuff like zeppelin, sabbath, deep purple, and modern guitar gods like satriani, vai, and malmsteen. I am a guitar player so I always hated talentless crap hair bands.

Funny thing... I saw winger and Mr. Big live. Winger opened for Deep Purple and Mr. Big opened for Rush... the first two concerts I ever saw.

Okay... now I'm rambling... caught up in my glory days.

TCO, while I respect you for being so well-versed and knowledgeable about all manners of metal, I feel that your expertise is lost on most of us. Very few of us know the difference between speed/thrash/black/doom metal, so pointing out that some of the bands being listed belong in different categories means pretty much nothing to us lay-people.

I'm familiar with thrash...old school Metallica being a good example. Would progressive be something like Dream Theatre? Could you maybe give an example of each style that we'd be familiar with so we can figure out what goes in which subcategory?
