BRISBANE, Australia (AP) - Steve Irwin, the hugely popular Australian television personality and environmentalist known as the "Crocodile Hunter," was killed Monday by a stingray during a diving expedition, police said. He was 44.

Irwin was filming an underwater documentary on the Great Barrier Reef in northeastern Queensland state when the accident occurred, Sydney's The Daily Telegraph newspaper reported on its Web site.

The Australian Broadcasting Corp. said Irwin was diving near Low Isles Reef near the resort town of Port Douglas, about 1,260 miles north of the state capital of Brisbane.

Well that is really a sad thing to hear.

I'm an Australian, I had huge respect and admiration for the man, and I won't sleep any easier tonight than any other night. Not that I'm an environmentalist or anything, but what he did for wildlife conservation was pretty special.

I always liked watching his programs... and think that it is very sad that he is gone.. but at least he died doing what he loved to do.. Yes he will be missed...

About the baby incident.. everyone went a bit nuts over that..

I know he wasn't all that popular in Austrailia, and that a lot of Austrailians were embarassed by him, but to be thankful because he was killed is a little messed up.

He was a little goofy, but he had a great passion for life, and did a lot for wildlife conservation..

If I was a mod you would be on vacation right now....

Anyway for my response... It is crazy how he used to jump into swamps, at night, and wrestle with massive crocodiles, handle deadly snakes, and a come into close contact with a bunch of other deadly creatures, and he dies from a stingray which are responsible for pretty much 0 deaths.. people are around them alot too.. The odds have to be over 1,000,000 to one that an encounter with one would end in your fatality...

I had a great respect for the man, even if he was nearly as much a comedian as an environmentalist, anyone that can turn environmentalism into celebrity has my respect. I'm not a hippy or a save the planet ist by any stretch of the imagination, but I have a deep love and respect for animals thanks to shows that paved the way for him. I wrote a huge essay for one of my college english classes about how the crocodile hunter bridges the gap between generations and classes. I am deeply upset at his passing, as is everyone I've spoken to about it. Whether or not a handful of austrailans think it's a loss or not, the rest of the world will mourn him.
