Red face Skelooth - I need your expertise re: bandwidth.

From time to time I run across websites that are having difficulties with exceeding their bandwidth limits. My site is sitting idle. I often would like to offer bandwidth to a site that I enjoy in lieu of a cash donation, but I have no idea how it works.

How difficult is it to mirror a site? Would I be opening a can of worms since, after all is said and done, I'll only have a few hundred gig to offer?

I don't understand.

And please don't ask why I'm paying for server space I'm not using. I have no good answer. :o

It's a pretty complicated process, and although I've had a fair bit of experience in webhosting I don't believe I've ever been in the situation where someone has wanted to donate some of their plan's bandwidth to another website.

As far as site mirroring goes, it's pretty difficult and would require a fair amount of collaboration with said website. Your best bet would be to pitch forward a cash donation imo, in order to help them buy their website some more bandwidth.

Please note: bandwidth and webspace are two completely different things.

^ What dton said. The bandwidth (amount of data that flows to and from the server) is tracked by the host. They use it soley as an excuse to charge money.... because whoever owns a T1 or T3 line does not pay any such fee.

So basically, there really is no way to donate bandwidth.

Darn. I was hoping to just be able to load their files on my site so they would have an alternate URL to offer during heavy times.

Oh well, I'll dust off my paypal.

Thanks for your help guys. You're the best!

True. Currently I have 500MB of space (I'm barely using 75MB), 10GB of bandwidth (for the month of April I had only used 18MB). When my current plan expires, I'll be upgrading to 15GB of space, and 400GB of bandwidth.

Why upgrade, you ask, if I'm not even using my current capacity? Because the price is the same, and I have two more domains on standby that I need to do something with. The new host swears that subdomains can be addressed directly. We'll see.

Yes, you can do that

It's not really complicated either. You tell them you're offering to mirror, they tell you what files to put where, and you're done

You could just host their large files if they're downloads ...
