Skelooth: Computer Help

I got this damn Adware shit on my computer (Windows XP) and I have no clue how to get rid of it.

I know which files they are, so I went into Change/Remove Program Files and deleted a few of them.

Is this the way to go about this situation?

Depends what kind it is.

Go to Download.com and get Ad-Aware SE personal. update it and try that.
if its CoolWebSearch your going to need CWShredder.

another tool would be Trend Micros free online scan, but their new interface is a little confusing compaired to what it was. but it will scan your computer, find and fix most problems and show you vulnerabilities.

Yeah, EliteBSU got it.

If you know what files they are, you are exactly right, just delete em.... but check back to make sure they don't reappear. If they reappear they aren't all the files you need to delete

If you ever find one that you can't delete, you need to restart in dos mode to delete it.

What I normally do to get rid of Viruses and the likes, is I google them to find manual uninstallation directions.

Also, if you know the exact name of the adware that is giving you problems you can type it in google, and there are some uninstall programs out there.

For anti-virus I use AVG, for adware I use Ad-Aware SE and Spybot Search & Destroy.

There's two mac viruses that have been released, it was big news. There will be plenty more.

The ONLY reason there's so many windows viruses is because people take the time to WRITE THEM. Otherwise a virus can be written for ANY operating system.

Linux is the best operating system for security aside from commercial Unix.

I thought Mac's database were tougher write a virus for.

Right now it is harder to write virii for a mac because OSX is based on BSD (sorta).

Viruses aren't really a problem on xNIX systems, but root kits are (that and everybody and their mother trying to put psybnc and mech and any irc proggie they can on them).

For a windows box, I like Ewido alot. It doesn't hurt also to get 'registry mechanic' and run that against your registry to look for orphaned and malicious things. To really clean up a system you need a bunch of different things. I have heard the new Microsoft AV program is pretty damned cool - I just haven't used it personally.
