It's amazing how much our lives are still effected by it.

The north/blue states still generally dislike the south and vice versa. (As a new yorker, I know i have a million one liners about 'red necks' as they do about us 'yanks')

Our government factions are for the most part representative of the south (republicans/confederacy) and the north (democrats/yankees). The only difference is that the blues are now more spread around on the coastal areas and canadian border, where as the reds are everyone else (and definitely spread over a larger lay of land, the blues are city dwelling folks).

School cirriculum in blue states is much more critical of the south during the civil war.

Feel free to add some thoughts and opinions. I think it's interesting how our modern day lives are still so dramatically effected by things that happened before our lifetimes. (Terrorist attacks? The West/Rome STARTED this crap with the crusades!)

The north still thinks it is superior to the south.

North is still trying to impose its values/views/whatever on the south.

South still believes in many of the rights outlined in the Constitution and Bill of Rights.

I might be from the north, but I love the south!

P.S. The civil war was about economics and federal versus states' rights, not slavery! The north has rewritten history to suggest that it was about slavery in an effort to justify the rightness of their actions.

My college is almost solely from the upper-class Boston area, with some people from New York and Connecticut. I, on the other hand, am from North Carolina. I really get sick of people from Mass. that think they are "true America" and all that crap. It is true that many, if not most, of the people at my college think they are smarter and better than Southerners.

And people who think the Civil War was waged because of slavery are being naive. Less than 1% of people in NC had slaves, but NC had one of the most active military presences in the South.

BTW I am not a Republican if that makes any difference.

So is West Virginia a Northern or a Southern state. We became a state in 1863 because Abraham Lincoln basically wanted to save us from the Virginia confederacy. If we ask the Southerner's what we are, they say we are yankees. If you ask people north of us they say we are redneck confederates. If you ask the people in this state, it depends where you are. City people think we are yankees, the country bumpkin think we are rebels. You can go to hicktowns with confererate flags on their front porch, and almost all country hick guys have sometype of rebel flag sticker on their jacked up truck.

Civil war? you mean the southern war for independence right...which btw ended in a mutual agreement between both sides to end the fight, and it was robert e. lee's idea to preserve the peace

Yeah, it's interesting how some of the states have changed. I live in a Northern state, but it is very red. It is always the first state called each presidential election, always for the Republican candidate. Meanwhile next-door Illinois is very blue.
