| IMPC Contestant | My english teacher always writes an article regarding this. He understands the fact that other religions don't celebrate Christmas, and therefore, we shouldn't press Christmas on them. However, when people say "Happy Holidays" around this time..... It really is complete crap. What Holidays are there to celebrate? Christmas, quite obviously, is the major chrisitian holiday, therefore you would think you should refer to that. What other "holidays" are there? There is chanukah(sp), however, this is a very minor holiday compared to other jewish holidays. Some people argue Kwanza, however, Kwanza is a cultural celebration, and therefore cannot be a holiday because the definition of a holiday is a "holy day". If the only major holiday is christmas, WHY DO WE SAY HAPPY HOLIDAYS? Besides, if you tell a jewish person Merry Christmas, why should he care? Truely, we are not "neglecting" their religion or being "inconsiderate" we simply thought that they were the majority. Everyone should be able to celebrate whatever holiday they want to equally. In schools you used to have "christmas" events. They changed them all to winter due to seperation of church and state, and to follow the american tradition of trying to never ignore the minorit. However, as long as other holidays can have their events, why not have christmas events? We are simply expressing ourselves as christians through a dance, party, or whatnot. At my school, we have had chanukah(sp) events, but we are forbidden to have any christmas events or even anything up around the school such as: bells, santa claus, trees, reindeer, etc..... If you ask me, this is the worst thing to do. If I can't express my religion, why can someone else. Ah yes, we cater to minority... I'm going to stop now. My thoughts are unorganized and I could go on for days. Sorry everyone lol. |

| Pro Stature | Wasn't it someplace in Britain that is trying to get Christmas lights banned? Some group of people threw a hissy fit about Christmas lights only being for Christians......riiight. I know many families who are various religions, or none at all, who put up lights. Wouldn't bother me a damn bit if a Jewish family put up some lights to celebrate any of their holidays or special events. Go for it. I'll probably drive by and admire them. Pretty sick and ignorant. |

Recipes: 0 Rep Power: 6 | The people we try to keep from offending by saying Merry Christmas the ones least likely to be offended by it. That is when Hindus or Muslims come to a western country, the US in particular, chances are they already know some or most of the customs. And the truly faithful of those religions understand tolerance (yes, true Muslims are very gentle people). My doctor and her family are Jewish, and when I saw her at the hospital on Christmas day one time, she stopped to wish me Happy Christmas, just as I wish her and her family Happy Hanukkah. I wish Hindu friends and acquaintances Happy Divali. And they wish me Merry Christmas. Why shouldn't Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists have a Merry Christmas too? They can't enjoy the day and the festivities? It IS the season, after all. :wtf: As my sister pointed out, it's those people who have no faith who are most offended by Merry Christmas. I was listening to a TV program my 12 year old step-daughter was watching (That's So Raven) and was appalled when I heard that Christmas is a time to welcome Santa and give and share. No mention made of what the original gifts were (uh, gold, frankincense, myrrh?) and to whom they were give (the name Jesus come to mind?). I'm not a holy roller by any means, but c'mon! ![]()

Recipes: 0 Rep Power: 58 | If you look up the history of the "Christmas tree" I think you will find that it was a pagan tradition to have a decorated tree or bush in the home to celebrate the Winter solstice. (December 22nd is the shortest day of the year in the Norther hemisphere.) That reminds me, I have to pick up my "Christmas tree" today. ![]() *
