I work in retail at the moment - selling audio and visual equipment. We're the biggest retailer in town, second biggest in the state - we happen to have the largest TV showroom in the state. I saw an ad on TV tonight for one of our competitors - they claim to have the biggest range, the best prices, and expert staff who know everything. They also claim to be home theatre specialists. Here's the comparison:

Plasma TV - Us: 26 on display. Them: 4.
LCD TV - Us: 53 on display. Them: 20.

On average, our AV section - TVs and Audio - turns over in two days what those clowns turn over in a week. Their whole store, that is - electrical, furniture and bedding. And they still consider themselves a threat to our business

Well, it seems people do know better. Everytime someone comes into the shop, they cannot believe the number of flat panel TVs we have on display. People come in to look for a TV, and over 80% of the time will stick around and buy from us - there's no need to go to four different places to compare different TVs when you have every TV you could want under one roof.

Now have a Philips 37" LCD TV. About to buy a house, so I'm gonna get an extra few grand and get the new Pioneer 43" plasma panel when it's released. Only because the 50" won't fit in my room.

LCDs burn out? They have been used as computer monitors for a long time, why haven't I heard of this.

Also, who makes your favorite televisions? Samsung?

LCD's burn out after about 10years. Plasma's burn out after about 5years I believe.

Tho this isn't entirely the biggest problem with Plasma's... the problem you'll hear about Plasma's is that they suffer from an effect call image burn. This is where static objects on the display - if left on display for long enough - end up leaving a shadowy ghost image on the panel.

An example of this would be for example, news channels. That sliding scroll on the bottom of the screen with all the news bits flashing across can often leave image burn if you leave your Plasma on.. CNN all the time.

Then, LCD's do have their own downsides...

Their contrast ratio isn't as good as plasma's. The current maximum contrast ratio you'll find on an LCD is about 1:1000. Brightness is of a similar problem in comparisson to Plasma technology.

LCD's also suffer from their image rendering response. You'll see it written on the specs as "Response time: x ms". This is the delay created by the technology design itself. LCD's pulse electrical signals into the crystals of the panel. Different voltages and frequency of pulses corrilates to different colours to be displayed.

Overall, both LCD's and Plasma's have their up and downsides. However, it is the general opinion of the television industry that LCD's will show the most potential. While the Plasma technology has reached forseen theoretical maximum design, LCD technology is still relatively infintile and warrants continued research and development. It's more likely that future televisions will all be LCD technology or something completely different, rather than Plasma.
