A Bodybuilding IRC channel

I thought I might run an idea passed you guys and see what you have to say and also gauge interest on the idea.

What do you think about having a Bodybuilding mIRC channel? It would be a great Way to collaborate through IRC with other Iron mass users and whoever may stop by. A channel like this would be excellent along side this forum, people can come in And get quick and fast answers in a chat room. Myself and a few known BB.com forum Members are regulars in #Bodybuilding on WonderNet.nu which we've setup - we've already had many interesting Bodybuilding related conversations and a lot of good times in there, it's a good place to hang-out with other fellow bodybuilders.

We are trying to get this off the ground and on its feet. But we need support to get the channel up and running. I believe a channel like this would be a great idea.

To those who are unsure what mIRC is I'll briefly explain to you what it is:

mIRC is a program for Windows. IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat. The IRC network is a virtual meeting place where people from all over the world can meet and talk (well, type). On IRC you meet others on "channels" (Rooms, usually with a certain topic of conversation e.g., Bodybuilding) There is no restriction to the number of people that can participate in a given discussion.

If you guys think this little idea is a good one, I can write up a Newbie mIRC guide for anyone that might be interested, or until then - I'll awsner ANY questions you might have. :nosthumbs

By mods I assume you mean channel Operators?

If thats what you mean, myself and two others are operators in the channel, if this idea turns out a success and we get influx of people coming in we'll appoint more, prefably from this site.

IRC is a great place to be. This guide I've written up is for someone who has never used IRC before or someone who has no idea how to get on. These basic instructions that I will go through will be for setting a nickname, connecting to a network and of course joining a channel.

What’s needed?

mIRC which is available for free here.
Once you download it, install it.

Configuring mIRC

Now run mIRC by clicking it's shortcut. Once it loads go to File > Options

You will need to make a nickname and an alternate nickname (nick) and insert it the fields provided. You will also need to put something in the full name and email address fields; you can use whatever you want for example you can have your E-Mail as fake@fake.org

Setting up which server to use

Click the add button and you should see the following pop-up

Just type in what you see in that picture and press 'Add' and the server will be in your list. Once you've added the details for the WonderNet server click the button to connect to the server as show in the next picture.

Ok I've connected, What do I do now?

Great, if everything went well you should see this in your status window in mIRC:

All you need to do now is to get onto the bodybuilding channel by typing this in your status Window:

And hit ENTER! It will make you join #bodybuilding automaticly and you can begin chatting with other fellow bodybuilders from around the world :nosthumbs .

How to register your nickname

Once again, go to your Status Window and type in /msg NickServ REGISTER "password" "youremail@here.com" (without the quotes) as shown below and hit ENTER!

Once you have done that, you've successfully registered your own nickname on WonderNet which means no one can use it but you - neat feature aye?

. To use this feature every time you connect you type this in your status window without the quotes "/msg Chanserv IDENTIFY password" and hit ENTER. There is a way to make mIRC do all of the above automatically but I won't go into that now because I'd like to keep this simple.

Well it does sound good but isn't irc like extremely easy for hackers to prey on people with?

I'm in there 24/7 along with another 6 to 7 people at any given time, we might not be at the computer all the time but theres always people in to chat too.

IRC is like a brick wall, it aint going to let any hacker/cracker in your computer due to the latest mIRC program out it's completely safe, I've been using it for ages not a problem. But as for any instant messaging program never accept unknown files from random or unknown people.

Indeed, this network (WonderNet) is clean of those type of people not one problem unlike on EFnet and others.
