Default Beer - Need some assistance

Anyone who knows me knows I don't drink frequently, but when I do it's usually rum. I've had a few beers before, but am culturally deficient in my knowledge of beer and beer culture.

I have some business meetings coming up and would like to have a quality beer while waiting for the dinner crowd or something with dinner perhaps. I usually just grab whatever, and feel lost when people start ordering all kinds of seemingly trendy brews, black and tan, or something that sounds a bit different.

Sure, I've had MGD, Bud, Bud Light, Coors, Sam Adams, etc. and Heiniken, Corona, and others... but I don't really have a beer that I'd say is "my" beer of choice.

Any thoughts and reflections on beer drinking, culture, etc. that you can share are greatly appreciated.

And, no -- I'm not adding beer to my 2008 IMPC nutrition plan... lol...

If you are not too into drinking the heavily hopped (bitter) micro brew type beers, yet you want to get something that is tasty. Order a Hefeweizen.. Hefeweizen (German for "yeast wheat") is not a brand, but a type of beer brewed by alot of different companies.. I have never had a bad one.

The white variety Belgian white are also very good.. blue moon brewery makes a pretty damn good one. Sam Adams also makes one.

Here is a little more info on them Wheat beer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hope I helped ya.

I'm not a fan of beer, at all, but if and when I do drink it it's usually something black as night.

I'd rather have a whiskey.

Leinenkugels isn't bad ... not exotic by any means.

I'd just make sure they drank enough to not care what it tastes like

Well, it depends on what type you like.

There's bourbon, scotch, rye, tennessee, irish and japanese whiskey. Usually you'll find the first 4 at bars, Japanese whisky is hard to come by.

Bourbon has a peppery flavor, it can taste almost like burnt toast. It usually has a sweet nose to it. Stick to Knob Creek and Woodford Reserve at bars. There are a lot of good small distilleries that make bourbon but they won't usually be carried at bars.

Tennessee is similar to bourbon in it's distillation process but they differ slightly in taste. Jack Daniels is about the only Tenn. whiskey you'll find at a bar. I'm currently boycotting them as they've lowered the proof of their black label whiskey without making an announcment as to why. I may have to forgo that boycott as I want to try the new Gentleman Jack.

Rye has a more acidic taste to it. Rye is possibly one of the most complex whiskeys around. Most Canadian brands are rye though the concentration is not regulated. Stick to Wiser's, Gibson's, Canadian Club, Sazerac and Rittenhouse. Crown Royal is okay, but there are quite a few better. I own a limited edition bottling of Crown and that's probably the only one I ever will.

Scotch is a different beast all together. Especially when comparing blended to single malts.

When you drink a blended scotch you're tasting all of Scotland.

When you drink a single malt you're tasting a specific region of Scotland.

Typically scotch is characterized by it's peaty taste as they use it heavily in the distilling process. Then depending on the distillery and bottling there will be different flavors if they use a bourbon, sherry or port cask. The Balvenie has been known to use Rum casks as well.

Failsafe blended scotches are: Johnnie Walker Black, Green, Gold and Blue (if you feel like spending money go with Blue). Don't order Red unless you want to mix, which I advise against.

Single malts are hard to reccomend to beginners because the large amount of peat in the palate can be quite off putting.

Irish whiskeys are generally more mellow than their Scottish cousins. The Irish distill their whisky 3 times instead of twice like the Scots. This removes a lot of "character" from the whisky leaving it, in my opinion, bland and banal. If I order Irish, I'll order Bushmills 16 year old. Jameson is mediocre at best.

I have no experience with Japanese whiskys.

If you want to drink, good, whiskey, you're going to have to spend money. It's not uncommon for me to spend around $100 a bottle.

What a great post... thanks.

I'll prolly just order a stout and/or Knob Creek and nurse that for a while.
That Gentleman's Jack sounds inviting, too... maybe I'll grab one of those one night.

Or shots of tequila all night with the ladies...
(But probably not... I think I want to get stuff done and maybe hit the hotel gym a few times. Just a few drinks to keep my hands busy...)

Forgot to mention Chivas. The 12 is acceptable, 18 is much better. Chivas 12 is subpar compared to Johnnie Black from my testings.
