Angry Baseball and softball dropped from Olympics

SINGAPORE -- Baseball and softball were tossed out of the Olympic program, effective at the 2012 London Olympics, by secret vote of the International Olympic Committee today.

The IOC's full membership, at last acting on three-year-old proposals that it consider changes in its sports program, held 28 separate votes on the 28 sports currently in the program. In agreement with the 28 sports bodies, the IOC executive board agreed beforehand not to release vote totals nor where the various sports ranked in relation to each other.
IOC president Jacques Rogge called the decision "an opportunity for two new sports to be in the program of 2012."

The IOC previously determined that it would keep a ceiling of 28 sports and 10,500 athletes in the Summer Games, and would only invite new sports into the program if others were voted out.

Arguments against keeping baseball included the inability of its international federation to deliver the sport's biggest names -- that is, Major League Baseball stars -- to compete in the Games. It didn't help that IOC members have seen a double standard with MLB's hesitancy to sign onto the Olympics' World Anti-Doping Agency protocol.

Softball, which first was included in the Olympics at the 1996 Atlanta Games, had been considered expendable because its worldwide popularity is minimal, allowing the Olympics to be dominated by the U.S. women. Also, with the exit of baseball, the Olympics no longer needs softball's numbers to balance the participation of both sexes.

Rogge said the IOC's executive board would "come back as quickly as possible with proposals" on the next step. There already has been a study recommending that new Olympic sports would come from a list including golf, karate, roller sports, rugby and squash.

WTF?!?!?!?!? :banghead:

So, are we going to have Roller Derby in the Olympics?

Maybe Dodgeball will be next!

I was looking at the list of obscure sports that are already in there...
I think I could be an Olympian!

Did you know Skeet ( Trap ) shooting is a current Olympic sport?

Remember, always iron safely, and live to iron another day. That pile of laundry ain't gonna go away in a hurry, so don't take risks with it.
