Recipes: 0 Rep Power: 11 | I'm sure there are lists out there which attempt to name the 10 all time greatest albums. There are probably a few threads about it here. But humor me and list them again - whether they've been influential, inspirational or just good. For me (no particular order): Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness This is what started it all in terms of death metal. So many artists out there proclaim that this album was what started them on their own path that it cannot be denied. I prefer Blessed are the Sick personally, but without Altars there would be no Blessed. Hypocrisy - Into the Abyss This was the first death metal album I purchased. It sounded good at the time, and led to me buying more death metal albums. Listened to it again recently, and it just blew me away. Satyricon - Dark Medieval Times Awesome album - the first truly black metal album I really sat down and enjoyed. The fact Satyr was 18 when this album was recorded - and the only contribution of Frost was the drumming - makes it even more incredible. Slayer - Reign in Blood I know, people claim to prefer Show No Mercy or South of Heaven - but Reign in Blood is a classic. Tom Arayas scream at the beginning of Angel of Death - the first vocal of the album - was monumental at the time. Thrash metal at it's best. Psycroptic - Scepter of the Ancients Isle of Disenchantment introduced these guys; Scepter of the Ancients put them on the map. This album is consistently reviewed as one of the great technical death metal albums of all time. One of the few bands who don't play guitar solos who don't completely suck balls. Nile - Blackseeds of Vengeance Copped a bit of shit for being slower than it's predecessors. But it proved Nile could be slow, brutal and still kick ass. I prefer Annihilation of the Wicked - only slightly, mind you - but the impact this album had on the American death scene was profound. Nile remain one of the top US metal acts at the moment. Behemoth - Thelma.6 I can't mention Nile without Behemoth. To me, Demigod is their best to date - but Thelma.6 seemed to signal the end of their black metal days and the beginning of the death metal era. At this point, they began to rule a whole lot more. Suffocation - Effigy of the Forgotten One of the early brutal death albums - almost a grind crossover - but it kicks ass. That's all that really needs to be said. Entombed - Left Hand Path Early on, Entombed kicked ass. They've changed their sound over time - as is often the case - and they sounded their best early on, as is often the case. One of the original death metal albums - again, influential to many. Edge of Sanity - Crimson II I'm no longer a fan of progressive anything - progressive death, progressive rock - nothing. Having said that, this deserves a mention. Edge of Sanity recorded a huge album in Crimson - one 44 minute track - which was highly acclaimed across the metal world. Soon after, Dan Swano - one of the original members of the band; forming it when he was just 16 - left. Speculation as to the reason for the departure still exists now - some accounts claim he was booted out, others claim he left. Edge of Sanity continued without him, and after a series of shit albums, Swano decided on one final "F**k You" to his former bandmates. One man, one album, under the Edge of Sanity banner. He single handedly showed the other clowns what music was all about, then brought about an end to his creation. The inclusion of Crimson II precluded my addition of My Dying Brides album As the Flower Withers. And I hate myself for it ![]()

| IronMass Donator | Ihateeveryone - I gotta question a couple of those. Suffocation - Effigy of the Forgotten is a kickass album for sure, but I think Pierced from Within might be a stronger album. Throw down on some 'Thrones of Blood' and think about it. And Entombed, probably their best album (IMO) was Wolverine Blues. I know it was almost 'mainstream' but it still was a solid album, with the best production and some of the best examples of cold northern european grind. |

| IronMass Donator | Ok, my top 10. Alice in Chains - Unplugged. Layne Staley was so on point for this album that it was almost scary. His voice was haunting and pained and they played some of their best shit. One of the best produced live albums ever in my opinion (right behind Delicate Sound of Thunder by Pink Floyd). Deicide - self titled. As soon as 'Lunatic of God's Creation' comes on, you know you are knee deep in a badass metal album, 'Dead by Dawn' another classic. I cut my metal teeth with Deicide when this album came out, and have been listening to it since. Slayer - either Seasons in the Abyss or Reign In Blood. Both are hugely influential in my life, and when I heard the rain at the beginning of Raining Blood, the hairs on the back of my neck stand up and I'm ready for ****ing war. Classic, timeless album. D.R.I. - Dealing With It. A true thrash lovers paradise. 33 minutes, 24 songs - what more can you ask for. I saw them in '93 with my late friend Dave. We tattooed the D.R.I bb on his arm before the show and that was the first pit where I felt I really got my ass handed to me - it was spiritual. Sepultura - Arise. If you have blood in your veins and metal in your heart, this is a classic too. I have been listening to this album at least once a week since probably '92 or '93 when we got a bootlegged copy of Dead Embryonic Cells (the EP) and had to get the actual album. After all these years, I still am not tired of this album (throw in some 'Desperate Cry' and go deadlift). Danzig - Danzig II, Lucifuge. To hell with the first album with that overplayed piece of crap 'mother', get a piece of 'Her Black Wings' and call it a day. Pantera - Vulgar Display of Power. I look like a more muscular Dimebag Darrell. I cried like a bitch when he got shot, I wrote the cover article for Music Incider magazine about him. I'm seriously considering a Dimebag tat as an honor to the man himself. This album got me playing guitar, this album got me pumped up before every fight I've ever been in. If this isn't in your mp3 player, you might want to make some tea and sit down to an evening of watching the Lifetime network. Circle of Dust - Brainchild. If anybody has ever heard of this band, I'd be impressed. Classic industrial feel, without all the bullshit pomp and circumstance you usually get out of a good 'grindy' kind of industrial. I'll send you some if you ask, album came out in '93 I think and it is still fresh and on top of things. Marilyn Manson - Portrait of an American Family. Just good damned listening. Before he became a pop icon of strange, and post Spooky Kids, Manson was a force to be reckoned with. He was ordained in the CoS by LeVay himself, so I have to give him respect as a family member I guess. Motley Crue - Shout at the Devil. This is the one that started it all for me. My brother was over at this chicks house laying pipe, and I was in the living room and she had that playing. I was hooked from that point on. I stole the tape when we left and I wore it out. I don't know what would have happened if I hadn't found that shit when I did - I might have kept on down the Run DMC and Kraftwerk path I was already heading towards if it wasn't for the title track. Faith No More - Angel Dust. Mike Patton is a genius, and I think the true level of his insanity came to a head on this one. I have many pleasant memories I don't think I can actually remember while listening to this album. Every song is a story unto itself, and completely different than anything else on the album. Honorable mention: Gwar - Scumdogs of the universe. Anthrax - Sound of White Noise Hatebreed - Perseverance Janes Addiction - Nothing Shocking Johnny Cash - At Folsom Prison Ministry - Psalm 69, Land of Rape and Honey, the mind is a terrible thing to taste Lords of Acid - Voodoo U NIN - Pretty Hate Machine, Downward Spiral, Broken / Fixed Pink Floyd - Wish you were here, momentary lapse of reason, division bell Primus - Sailing the Seas of Cheese, Pork Soda Rev Horton Heat - Martini time White Zombie - La Sexorcisto, Astrocreep |
